A new mum claims she’s been left in her mother-in-law’s bad books after breaking a “promise” that she would be the very first person to hold her newborn baby son

A new mum who finds her mother-in-law to be “a little controlling”, has found herself in her bad books after supposedly going back on a “promise” she’d made about her son’s birth. The 26-year-old woman says her mother-in-law had initially wanted to be with her in the delivery room for the birth, but she wasn’t too keen on the idea.
Her husband reassured her he’d keep his mother away from the delivery room as long as she could be the first person to hold the new baby. The then-pregnant woman didn’t commit to this agreement and just “stayed silent”, however it would appear her mother-in-law took the “promise” very much to heart.

When the baby was born, a few days ago, the husband was apparently mainly preoccupied with making sure his mother would be the first person to hold their son. However, she was out of town at the time, attending the wedding of one of her friend’s daughters, and wouldn’t return until a couple of days after the birth.
Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Throwawwyal524655, the fed-up daughter-in-law recalled: “My mum and sister already came to help and they held my son as they were helping me after my husband went back to work. I had no to help and they were my go-to.
“My mother-in-law and my husband knew. They both went off and started throwing a fit saying that I betrayed her and that I made a promise and then broke it. My husband tried to get her to calm down after she came home lashing out, but she scolded us both and then walked out.
“He blew up at me saying I screwed up and violated the agreement we had. I said that my mum and sister were helping me out, and held the baby so what? He got more p***** and claimed I had no respect for his mum and her wishes and told me that I hurt her feelings and ruined her grandbaby’s birth memory.”

She didn’t want to keep arguing, but her furious husband wasn’t done, blasting her as “unbelievably selfish”. He also ordered her to “fix” her supposed mistake, although it’s unclear how exactly she would be able to do that, even if she wanted to.
Both her mother-in-law and her husband are said to be still sulking, and she’s started to wonder whether she has actually done anything wrong.
One person advised: “It seems like your husband and his mom are under the impression that they have a choice in any of this. This is what we like to call, wrong.”
Another commented: “So sorry you are a single mum to two babies and have a third in such close orbit.”
