Mrs Hinch fans’ hack for turning white school shirts bright again is ‘life-changing’

With the school holidays over, it’s time to bring out the school uniforms once more. If you’ve just realised your children’s shirts are less than sparkling then you’re in luck, as Mrs Hinch fans have shared their top tips

Parents across the country will agree there’s nothing so troublesome as white school shirts. Sure, they’re less expensive than blazers and easier to replace, but kids go through them so quickly that the price can quickly stack up. No matter the care your children take, even the most spotless of shirts (i.e. those that have miraculously avoided food stains and ink marks) end up looking dull.

Thankfully, it’s not hard to get the whites shining bright again if you know how to care for them properly, and Mrs Hinch fans have been exchanging brilliant tricks. Cleaning gurus were happy to help each other out after a mum raised the all-too-common problem in a post to Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips on Facebook.

She wrote: “White school shirts are having my life!! How do I get them back white they always look grey after they’ve been in wash or dryer I’m literally forever replacing them.”

In response, parents were quick to share their tired-and-tested methods, and a couple of favourites soon emerged.

“I use Napisan in the white wash,” read one reply. “My grandson has had his 1 1/2 years I soak them in Napisan now and again only wash with other whites,” revealed a second. Another agreed: “Soak in Napisan – life changer.”

Meanwhile, plenty more parents sung the praise of Ariel powder. “Wash only whites in the same wash and use Ariel powder on 60 degree wash if fabric allows otherwise 40 degrees,” said one responder.

A different fan went so far as to claim the product is the best going. “This is my mantra. Ariel the best powder in the world,” she wrote.

Other advice included using dishwasher tablets and elbow grease spray.

One mum wrote: “Elbow grease spray. My daughter got a stain on her shirt so I sprayed the stain with it and popped it in the wash. Stain gone. She then put it on for school and I thought she had got toothpaste on her shirt. on closer inspection the area I sprayed was pure white. needles [sic] to say all school shirts are now soaked init [sic] before the wash and they are bright again.”

Another recommended: “2 dishwasher tablets 1 in drawer 1 in machine put on a boil wash.”
