Mum fears she must change son’s name – or everyone will keep making royal comparison

A mum is worried she’s picked out a name that is “too royal” and would lead to her son constantly being asked the same question at every birthday party and event

Many parents purposefully name their children after famous faces hoping it will inspire the characteristics they so admire. Regardless of the reason, if their source of inspiration is obvious, they best be sure they like their child’s namesake. Or at least, they should be certain they won’t mind fielding questions about the choice, no matter how often they arise.

Well, one mum has been left worrying she needs to change the name she’s picked out for her baby boy, or he will “forever be plagued” with the same type of questions. Having chosen a name she thinks might be “too royal”, she thinks people will always wonder if her son was named after a member of the Royal family.

And while she takes no issue with the implication, she thinks it might be tiring to have to answer the question over and over again.

Posting to Mumsnet, the mum-to-be was keen to ask if Charlie is now “too royal” to be used as a boy’s name.

She wrote: “I’m due next month. We struggled to find a name for a while, and we finally agreed on Charlie a few months ago. We have since been referring to him, talking to him etc and that really feels like his name.

“We are not Royalists (not dead against them either, just indifferent!) but I can’t stop this feeling that with recent events he will forever be plagued with ‘Oh, is he/are you named after the King’ type comments, which would bug me.

“Every birthday party would be around the same time as coronation-type stuff, etc.

“Am I overthinking this and nobody would make the connection? The few people I’ve asked have laughed and said I’d better come up with a new name, but nothing seems like his name now!”

However, most parents disagreed, suggesting the couple need not worry about choosing a new name.

One person wrote: “Yep overthinking it. Charlie is an awesome name… popular but classic and can’t see that changing. People are unlikely to associate your child’s age with the coronation of the new king after the first few months.”

A second said: “I think king Charles has always been more of a Charles than a Charlie and if you like the name you should use it!”

And another said: “Unless it’s short for His Majesty King Charles III I think you should be fine.”
