When you are looking to get fit, completing workouts in the garden can be a great way to get into shape without having to pay to join a gym. But one mum has been told she ought to join one – so her neighbours don’t have to listen to her

When you are trying to relax in your garden, the last thing you want to hear is a noisy neighbour. While some sounds are to be expected, there are others you might judge unreasonable. But one mum from Scotland has been left gobsmacked after her neighbour complained about the noises coming from her garden, when she completes at-home workouts.
The problem: her neighbour demanded she move indoors or join a gym, despite her insistence she makes “hardly any noise”. And it sounds like she has been left in a very awkward situation, as her neighbour suggested her panting sounds “erotic”.

Stunned by what she thought was an unreasonable request, the woman took to Mumset to share her side of the story.
In her post, the woman claimed: “This morning after my workout (I do HIIT – 20 minutes), the neighbour next door came to the door and asked if I could work out inside as they are trying to relax in their back garden in peace and watch their fish. I was a bit taken aback.”
She added: “My DH heard this and came to the door and politely said that I’m not making lots of noise, it’s day light and we are entitled to work out in our garden. He pointed out what will they think when our daughter is older and playing in the garden? The neighbour responded ‘that’s different’ and apparently my panting noises are a bit ‘erotic sounding’.
“At this point we said to the neighbour that again, I’m not making excessive noise and that I’m simply working out. His response? ‘Well join a gym then””.
Explaining her outrage, she continued: “I’m actually really annoyed. We have CCTV outside the property so I checked to hear how loud I am when working out and honestly hardly any noise, mostly just heavy breathing which the camera struggled to pick up. It’s not like I’m making noises like Monica from friends when she gets her massage.”
“The reason for me working out in the back garden is my DH is working from home and my baby is napping so I don’t want to be creating noise inside to wake up baby or disturb DH working,” she added.
And the mum concluded her post by asking if she had been unreasonable or her neighbour was at fault. Well, Mumsnet users were quick to take her side, with many blasting the neighbour for the “rude” request.
One person wrote: “Your neighbours are being ridiculous. They are essentially complaining about you breathing in your garden for 20 minutes.”
Another added: “Your neighbours are rude and unreasonable. It’s day time!”
And a third person agreed, commenting: “They sound bonkers!
“Don’t let them bully you out of doing something positive for yourself in your own garden.”
