The mum thought dyeing her carpet would be cheaper than replacing it completely – but has been left horrified after her DIY attempt left her carpets and walls ruined

A woman has been left mortified after her attempt at dyeing the carpet in her home went horribly wrong – leaving the fabric, and her walls, completely ruined. Melissa Ashleigh had wanted to change her carpets to a fashionable dark grey, but instead of forking out to have them professionally replaced, she thought she could save herself some cash by dyeing them herself.
In a viral video posted online, the mum hilariously showed viewers exactly why you shouldn’t try painting your carpets, as she made a mess of both the fabric and her once-clean walls. Using what appeared to be a carpet cleaner, Melissa sprayed her floors with dye, but the final result was patchy and left her surroundings – and herself – covered in paint.

The woman shared the video to her TikTok account @melissaashleigh0, and poked fun at the situation in the caption as she left several laughing emojis alongside the words: “Thought I’d try dyeing my carpet.”
After commenters demanded an update on what seemed to be a sheer disaster, Melissa took to TikTok once again to let people know exactly what had happened to her hallway – which will end up costing her a fortune, as she now needs to replace her carpets anyway.
She said: “So this is the carpet, and these are the walls that I’ve ruined because I didn’t use anything [to protect] up the sides. So yeah, it’s going to need ripping out.”
The videos have left people online in stitches, as while most commenters feel sorry for the mum, they also can’t stop giggling at the disaster – with many saying it was an “instant regret” moment.
One person wrote: “This is what I would do but then instantly regret it.”
While another said: “This is definitely one of those things you instantly regret.”
And a third posted: “Oh my god, don’t you hate it when you take up all those hours and then you don’t like what you did and then have to pay extra?! Sorry hun, always worth a try though!”
Others were on board with Melissa’s DIY efforts though, as they told her to give it another go and insisted that a few more coats of dye might help to make the end result look less patchy.
Someone stated: “Yeah it’s patchy, but girl, just do it two more times! It will be good then.”
As someone else added: “You always have to do a few coats, like at least 2-3 coats. But not taping up the skirting boards is totally a mood but we always regret it after.”
