A mum sparked a debate about wedding guest etiquette after she asked fellow parents for their opinion about the dress she was thinking of wearing to an upcoming wedding

Knowing what to wear to a wedding can prove incredibly difficult, as people often have differing opinions about what is appropriate. Etiquette experts tend to agree on a couple of basics – like no white dresses or offensive slogans – but other than that guests are often left to figure it out for themselves.
Even when there is a dress code in place, there’s room for error. One mum who did not want to pick an “unreasonable” outfit took to Mumsnet to ask for advice – and it is fair to say her dress divided opinions. Her choice: a £250 frock that many loved but some feared would not be wedding appropriate.

Asking for advice, the woman wrote: “Mumsnet don’t destroy me. I haven’t been to a wedding as an adult. Am I being unreasonable to wear this dress to a wedding? I don’t know so am hoping for those who do’s opinion.”
She then shared two photos of a lime green dress that retails for £250 on RAT&BOA.
From the front, the dress features a subtle print with a sleek cowl-neck design. And the dramatic open back is sure to make any wearer look both elegant and sensual, as it is combined with a high-reaching slit.
So it is not hard to see why many people loved the dress. “It’s gorgeous,” read one comment; “love it,” said another.
But not everyone thought the dress was right for a wedding, especially if the woman was planning to attend a church service.
“If you think you’ll feel comfortable in it go for it. I think it looks more like an evening dress because of the low back and the shine to it though,” wrote one mum.
A second agreed: “If it’s an informal day/evening occasion – I think the low back would raise eyebrows in a church, say.”
“I think it is highly unsuitable and would roll my eyes if I saw you in it at a wedding,” thought another commenter – though she conceded this judgement was made because it “would not be the type of thing worn at the weddings I go to.”
But finding a middle ground, one person said: “Looks like lots I saw at a wedding recently, although I’d probably have a little wrap or something during the day, love the colour.”
