‘My boyfriend is ditching me on New Year’s Eve for a wedding he wasn’t even invited to’

A woman was left seething after her boyfriend told her he wouldn’t be spending New Year’s Eve with her, as he’ll be at a wedding instead – even though he wasn’t invited

Whether you’re planning on spending your New Year’s Eve at a party or curled up on the sofa watching rubbish telly, you’ll likely be spending the last holiday of the year with your loved ones – and perhaps even sharing a kiss with someone special when the clock strikes midnight and 2023 officially begins.

But one woman has found out she won’t be spending the last day of 2022 with her boyfriend after he announced he would be ditching her to attend a wedding instead – even though he wasn’t invited to it.

The woman claimed that a person her partner knows is getting married on New Year’s Eve, but he was the only member of his friend group to not receive an invite, so he had originally planned to stay at home with her all day instead.

However, one of his mates has suggested he come along with them as their plus one because they thought it “would be funny” for him to crash the wedding as an uninvited guest – meaning he’s now ditching his girlfriend and bailing on their plans.

In a post on Reddit, the woman said: “My boyfriend brought up the other day that a person he knows is having their wedding on New Year’s Eve. All of his friends got invited except for him and he doesn’t know why, so we agreed to spend the day together [instead], but didn’t make any plans.

“Well. he just told me he’s going as a +1 to the reception (not the actual wedding), as one of his friends invited him and they thought it would be funny. [He said] ‘don’t worry, we’re all going to our friends’ parents’ place for a party around 8:30pm, so I’ll see you’.

“I’m taking this as I’m going to have to wait around for him to show up when – let’s be honest – I don’t know when that will be. It’s a wedding and everyone will be drinking. After he told me he was not going. He doesn’t see this as a problem.

“He has a history of pulling things like this. Makes me feel like I’m an afterthought and he doesn’t care. Do I have the right to be annoyed?”

Commenters on the post were baffled by the man’s behaviour, as they pointed out that not only will he be hurting his girlfriend’s feelings by ditching her, but he also has the potential to ruin someone’s wedding day by turning up uninvited.

One person said: “This is just cringy and sad. What point is he trying to prove? That he can’t take a hint? That he does not understand when he isn’t wanted? To show everyone that he’s immature, vindictive and spiteful? Why does he feel that he’s owed an invite to their wedding?”

While another added: “I’d be more concerned with the fact he thinks it’s appropriate to go as a plus 1 to a wedding where he is clearly not wanted. Sounds incredibly immature.”

A third person wrote: “Inviting yourself to a wedding you weren’t invited to sure seems like a solid example of the behaviour that he wasn’t invited in the first place for. He’s prioritising spitefully crashing a wedding over spending the holiday with you. Why should you have to sit and wait around for him? Make other plans.”
