‘My mate sacked me as her maid of honour – but still expects me to buy the wedding cake’

A woman who was sacked as maid of honour at her mate’s wedding has been left baffled after the bride demanded she still buys the cake – despite no longer being invited

Choosing who you have as part of your bridal party is entirely your decision, and if you’ve had a falling out with someone who was supposed to play an important part in your wedding, there’s nothing stopping you from giving them the sack.

But one woman has been left furious after her friend booted her from her maid of honour role – because despite being removed from the bridal party, she was still expected to spend money on the wedding.

The woman explained the bride fired her over a “dispute” about hair and makeup for the big day, and eventually took things a step further and completely uninvited her from the wedding after she told her friends what had happened.

The maid of honour was initially in charge of organising the wedding cake, but after being sacked, she phoned the bakery and cancelled the order so she could get her money back – leaving the bride furious.

In a post on Reddit, she said: “My (ex) best friend got married this Saturday. I was supposed to be the maid of honour, but she removed me from the wedding party over a dispute regarding my makeup, hair, and ‘disinterest in the wedding’. She then uninvited me from the wedding after I told friends my side of the story.

“I was responsible for the cake at the wedding but cancelled the order because I was uninvited and wanted to be reimbursed for all of my investments in this wedding. I told the bride I wasn’t going to bring the cake over for them.

“The new maid of honour went to pick up the cake and learned that I had cancelled the order. They were able to get another cake, but it apparently wasn’t as nice.

“The bride, groom, and my sister (who attended) told me it was unfair to cancel the cake. My sister thinks I should have let them enjoy their special day and then later discussed getting my money back. The bride refers to the cake as a gift and claims that a gift cannot be returned. The groom just agrees with literally anything his precious wife says.”

Commenters on the post were split, as while most said she had no obligations to organise the cake after being sacked, others said she should have made the situation clear to the bride.

One person said: “Not your responsibility if she relieved you of your duties.”

While another added: “You shouldn’t have to pay anything after you get uninvited. I would’ve at least tried to get the new maid of honour to reimburse me and tell her you’ll cancel if she won’t. That at least gives them the chance to make it less disruptive while still paying you back.”

And a third wrote: “You should not have been expected to provide a cake that you had paid for, but in the interest of being a decent human being, you should have told them that since you’ve already paid for the cake, they can either reimburse you for the cake and other wedding expenses, or you’ll be cancelling the order to get a refund.”
