A woman claims she now wants to change her newborn son’s name after becoming tired of her mother-in-law’s constant ‘subtle digs’, despite receiving plenty of compliments from other family members

As all parents will know, you can’t please everybody with your choice of name, no matter how carefully you choose it. One new mum knows this all too well, as she’s had to contend with her mother-in-law blasting her choice of baby name at every opportunity, despite other family members thinking it’s perfectly lovely.
According to the fed-up mum, she’s become so sick of her ‘stubborn’ mother-in-law’s constant ‘subtle digs’, that she’s now considering changing her son’s name altogether.
Taking to Mumsnet, where she goes by the username @97DS, the despairing woman explained her mother-in-law had made various criticisms throughout her pregnancy, making it clear that she wasn’t exactly ‘a fan’ of the baby name, and even asking whether they’d considered any others.

She wrote: “I just dodge the question and ignore it because I don’t have the energy to argue with her. She can be very opinionated and very stubborn.
“My baby is now a week old, and not officially registered yet but we have announced his full name to our friends, family, and on social media. My mother-in-law has gone out of her way at every opportunity to make a comment on his name.
“Even after a traumatic birth that landed me in theatre with major haemorrhaging, her first text to my husband was asking what the baby’s name is going to be.”

The mother-in-law is said to be so ardently against the name, she’s asked her son if he would consider changing it. She now even purposefully avoids saying his name when she’s around them, referring to him as ‘Junior’ instead.
His sentimental middle name, which is also the new mum’s dad’s middle name, has even proven to be a point of contention for her, despite attracting compliments from others in the family.
The woman continued: “My mother-in-law has kicked off big time. Pulling out crocodile tears and directly asking my husband to change the middle name to something that tributes her family instead.”
She’s keen to keep the peace as best she can, and her husband is now being swayed by guilt, but she feels as though she should stick to her guns, reasoning that it really isn’t her mother-in-law’s decision to make. Others quite agree.
One fellow mum commented: “Your child, your choice. If you yield to this where will it end? Babies have a habit of growing into their names anyway. How disrespectful of her.
“There’s no way I’d change my baby’s name to suit my mother-in-law or anyone else for that matter if both parents had agreed. What your mother-in-law is doing is hurtful and inappropriate. Stay strong.”
Another advised: “Why would you even consider pandering to your mother-in-law’s theatrics? If you do this now, you might as well let her raise your son as she will demand to have every single decision her way. Nip this madness in the bud now. It’s your baby, not hers.”
