‘My mum lost her mind over my dog’s name – she says it’s stupid and confusing’

A man has taken to Reddit to share how he named his new labrador puppy Sit because he thought it would be funny – his mum hates the dog’s name and wants it to be changed immediately

When it comes to naming a dog, owners can spend hours mulling over their options. But while some turn to their favourite books or movies for inspiration, others pluck something out of their head in the spur of the moment.

However, a 21-year-old has caused a divide in his family after naming his Labrador puppy Sit – simply because he thought it would be a funny name. Speaking to Reddit, the man explained how his mum has been urging him to change his puppy’s name because it’s “stupid and confusing”.

He said: “I adopted an adorable Labrador puppy and everybody in my family already loves her.

“The thing is my mum hates her name. I thought it would be funny to call her Sit.

“She says it’s stupid because she will never understand the command for sit because it’s her name.”

However, when trying to come up with a solution to this problem, he suggested using a different word for sit when trying to get his puppy to park her bum on the floor.

He added: “I said I’ll just use a different word for sit – so when I want her to sit, I’ll say butter or something. But then my mum said not everybody will know that I say butter when I mean the command sit.

“We had an argument about it but I still think it’s a funny name and now she is responding to it so I don’t want to change it. “

Explaining how the word sit now feels more like a name to him than a command, the man admits it will be confusing for others at first but believes they’ll get used to it just like he did.

“The word has become a name to me at this point. But my mum still thinks I’m stupid for calling her Sit – she says it has spoilt the dog a bit,” he said.

“I get how it’s confusing to start with but she will still be able to learn a sit command with a different word while still being called Sit.”
