‘My neighbour asked me to mind her dog while she was in A&E – I outright refused’

A woman has taken to Reddit to explain how her neighbour asked her to mind her dog while she was receiving treatment in hospital – she refused to help her in her time of need

Nobody enjoys being admitted into hospital – but it’s necessary to get you back to your fit and healthy self. When an emergency arises, you’re sometimes forced to rely on your family, friends or neighbours to help you out in your time of need.

However, one woman who refused to care for her neighbour’s dog after she was rushed into hospital for treatment has left people divided. Speaking to Reddit, the woman explained: “I’m a bit of an introvert and I have a very extroverted neighbour who is a bit of a pain.

“Every time she sees me outside with my dog she just has to walk up with her dog so they can ‘say hi’ and she can gossip about another neighbour.

“She asked for my number a few months ago so she could text me in case she saw anything sketchy happening around our apartment complex at night.

“I thought this seemed okay, and she hasn’t text me since then – until today.

Explaining how she works from home, the woman noticed her phone lighting up while she was on a Zoom meeting – and decided to ignore it until the meeting ended.

“She knows I work from home and she called me twice while I was working,” she added.

“I didn’t answer, so she texted asking if I was home. I told her I was in a Zoom meeting for work, but that I was home.

“She then told me she was in the ER and asked me to call her. Reluctantly, I did.

“She asked if I could get a key to her apartment from the leasing office and go into her apartment to let her dog out.

“I really don’t feel comfortable with this. Not only am I working, but I used to be a property manager and I know the type of issues that could arise from entering someone’s home without them present.

“I apologised but told her I didn’t really feel comfortable going into her apartment without her there.

“She was really rude and acted like I was to blame for her dog not being cared for.”

Feeling bad about her decision, the woman has asked Reddit users whether she is in the wrong for not helping out.

While most users agreed the neighbour “tried to guilt her into helping”, others said they would have been just as “pushy” if they found themselves in that situation.

One user said: “I mean she was rude and tried to guilt the woman in to caring for her dog – that’s an a***hole move.”

Another user added: “She is rude but honestly if I were in ER and was scared for my abandoned pet I might be a little pushy and desperate too.

“The woman isn’t required to do anything but I really do feel for the neighbour in this scenario.”

A third user said: “To be fair, someone in an ER could be given a little slack on that. The woman is still not the a***hole but she might’ve been pretty desperate. Thinking about your dog when you’re in the ER makes her OK in my book.”
