‘My neighbour is livid I park on the street – she told the police I’d abandoned my car’

A woman has told of her frustration as her neighbour keeps leaving ‘petty’ notes on her car windshield about her parking and is so mad about it, she’s even called the police to report the vehicle

If there’s one issue that’s bound to spark a dispute between neighbours, it’s parking. Whether you’re blocking part of the driveway, trying to claim the prime spot on the street outside your houses or have friends visiting and their cars are hogging the spaces, it can cause tension.

One woman knows this only too well as she’s found herself in a spot of hot water with her neighbour, who is livid about her parking – even though she claims she’s parked legally and hasn’t done anything wrong.

Turning to the internet for advice the unnamed woman explained that whenever she parks on the street her neighbour kicks off and has even called the police to report her vehicle as “abandoned”.

In a post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, the woman, thought to be from the US, revealed her neighbour had recently started leaving “petty” notes on the windshield of her car to complain about her parking and she wasn’t sure how best to proceed.

She explained: “I have a neighbor [sic] who gets mad when I park on the street even though it’s public street parking and literally anyone can park there.

“She’s called the cops on me before, for parking an ‘abandoned vehicle’ and they showed up and said I wasn’t doing anything illegal, it’s public street parking and my car is registered and legal, and they confirmed with me that I drive it daily to work.

“She told the cops to ask me to park in my garage and they asked me and I said I was using the garage as a woodworking shop, and it wouldn’t fit.

“So she started leaving notes on my car, I know it’s her because I have a dashcam that films motion even when the cars parked. I think she’s been trying to hide who’s leaving the notes cause she does it at like 2am in a hat and covid mask but it’s pretty obvious on the dashcam still.”

The woman continues to say that she didn’t open the note, just left it on her car and drove around until it crumpled away.

This didn’t deter the neighbour though as she simply put another note in its place.

She claims that other neighbours have since gotten involved in the situation, wanting to know what the notes on her car say – but she refuses to read them.

Her neighbour thought it was “s**t” that she wasn’t even looking at them, but she adds that it was “s**t” the other woman had called the police on her.

The post finished with her asking if she was in the wrong for leaving the “petty notes there until they disintegrate”.

Hundreds of people have since responded to the post, with many agreeing they didn’t see an issue with ignoring the notes.

One person said: “If you’re not bothered by them, I don’t see any reason to remove them. Sure, the easier option would be to throw them in the trash immediately, but I suppose your neighbour might think they can’t write a new letter yet, as long as there is another letter?”

Another commented: “I feel like leaving them there kinda makes the point ‘she hasn’t even opened the first, no point leaving another’ haha.”

While a third replied: “I think I would actually collect those letters, get those records of her putting them on the shield and telling her to stop or I would call a police on her for harassment. I wouldn’t just ignore it, because who knows what she is going to do next time. Maybe she would scratch your car or do some other damage to your property.”
