‘My neighbour says I’m selfish for not allowing her kids to play in my pool’

A woman has taken to Reddit to share how her neighbour believes her children have a right to play in her private swimming pool. She thinks she is selfish keeping it to herself

A woman has slammed her entitled neighbour who believes her children have a right to use her private swimming pool. She explained how she spent years saving up enough money to buy a house with a pool – and wanted to enjoy it in peace and quiet with her husband.

The 25-year-old woman, who moved from the UK to Spain, said: “We both attended university and got married before working there a year and moving here. Our jobs are very specialised and at high demand here in Spain so that’s why we make a reasonably high income, allowing us to move into this villa just before Covid. We are child free for multiple reasons including the fact we are both on the autism spectrum, which would make raising a child difficult.”

She went on to explain how her neighbour has three children living in a two bedroom house with a small garden that backs on to her pool area.

She told Reddit : “The fence is about head height, but not tall enough for it to be difficult to peek your head over. Being the nosy and bored b**** she is, she peers over a lot.

“It just so happened to be a day where my husband and I were lounging around in our pool, when her familiar face popped over the fence top.”

After spotting her in her garden, the neighbour rudely asked whether her kids could play in her swimming pool, claiming they’re bored and the pool doesn’t get much use anyway.

Her husband told the neighbour ‘No’ – but she complained they were being selfish and it’s unfair because her children are “fed up being cooped up inside all day”.

The woman added: “My husband said something to the effect of ‘That sounds like a you kind of problem’, which made her really angry.”

Wanting to put a stop to her nuisance neighbour once and for all, the woman is now applying for planning permission to build a taller fence between them.

“While it is still pending it seems it is likely to get approved. We are planning to not even tell her and just see the look on her face when it is getting built,” she added.

While most users agreed the neighbour was in the wrong to expect her children to be able to play in another person’s pool, others questioned whether the neighbour also expected her to watch over them.

One user said: “Not only is it completely inappropriate for her to feel like her kids are entitled to use someone else’s pool, but could you imagine the fit she would have if you had allowed them to use it and one of her kids got hurt?”

Another user added: “A faller fence is a great idea – cameras couldn’t hurt either and signs about trespassing. You know just cover all your bases against your neighbour and her brood.”

A third user said: “Get a pool cover – if there’s a kind that locks, get it. The last thing you need is for them to find a way to climb the fence and drown while you both are out, it would be a legal nightmare.”
