A woman was left gobsmacked after her sister-in-law to be refused to intervene when her daughter demanded to try on her engagement ring. The unnamed bride to be explained how her partner’s family came to visit to celebrate the engagement and his five-year-old niece was desperate to try on the ring.

However, as the child had previously damaged an expensive pair of shoes, the woman was hesitant to let the child play with her incredibly sentimental ring, so said no. She thought her sister-in-law would understand, but instead her response to her brother’s partner was brutal.

The bride-to-be revealed all in a post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, writing: “My fiancé’s sister and her husband came over for dinner last night. They have a five-year-old daughter, ‘Emily’.

“She is a very curious girl and loves to play and explore, and she really loves playing dress up. I have let her borrow many items of my clothing to try on for fun and put on fashion shows with.”

However during a recent visit, it was the sparkly engagement ring that captured Emily’s curiosity and she pleaded to try it on.

“I was personally uncomfortable with the idea of her trying it on because 1) the ring is very personal to me and very expensive and 2) I was still slightly scarred after the whole shoe incident and was worried about something like that happening again,” she explained.

She decided to refuse this request but her fiancé’s sister was less than impressed as the woman explained: “She started getting teary and that’s when her mom intervened and said, ‘Oh c’mon, just let her try it on for a second, she’s not gonna break the damn thing.'”

The woman politely refused again and claims things got awkward after that.

“Before they went out the door, my fiancé’s sister said ‘Well, now I get why you two don’t want children…it’s probably better off for everyone.’ I was immediately shocked by this absurd statement and my fiancé’ goes ‘That was f***ing uncalled for’ and she said ‘It’s just the truth’ and rolled her eyes and they all left.

“Now my fiancé’s refusing to speak to his sister and has told me that we’re not having her back again and everyone’s just overall upset. My fiancé doesn’t blame me, but I can’t help but think that maybe I should’ve acted differently. Am I the problem here??”

In response, more than 1,000 people have commented on the post, with one writing: “A five-year-old does not need to be trying on engagement rings. I’m honestly appalled at her parents reaction, especially after what happened with the shoes.”

While another said: “The parents are doing their child a disservice letting her think her acting this way is in any way okay.”

A third added: “Next she’ll want to try on her wedding veil and rip it. Would not invite any of them to the wedding..”
