‘My three mates all gave their kids the same name – they thought it was clever’

A woman has claimed three of her friends gave their kids the exact same name as they thought it was ‘super clever’ – but didn’t get the irony in the name they chose

If you and your best friend happen to fall pregnant at around the same time, you might be inclined to give your children names that go together to symbolise their bond. But one woman has been left baffled by her group of friends, as they decided not just to give their babies names that sound good together – but the exact same name.

The woman claimed she knows three friends who all got pregnant at around the same time, and when discussing baby names, they all said they wanted to choose something unique. One mum-to-be suggested using the word ‘Unique’ as a moniker to fully cement their “special” name – and they loved it so much that all three mums used it.

However, the woman pointed out that by the three of them naming their child ‘Unique’, the name no longer matches the definition of the word, as it’s not one-of-a-kind anymore.

In response to a question on Quora which asked for the “most laughable name” given to a baby for the sake of being unique, the woman claimed: “Literally, Unique. I know a group of three mum friends who all got pregnant around the same time. The story they told me was that they were sitting around thinking up names, and they all agreed they wanted their babies to feel special so they wanted unique names.

“At this point, it was discussed one of them had the brain wave to actually use ‘Unique’ as the name, and the others thought this was super clever and urged her to do it. In the end, they all ended up naming their babies Unique because they couldn’t get over how witty that was.

“Except that the fact that they were all named the same thing meant the name wasn’t nearly as unique as they had hoped was completely lost on them.”

You can, of course, give your child whatever name you think is best for them, although if you post your baby’s unusual moniker on social media, you might raise a few eyebrows.

We recently reported that another mum had claimed her daughter had been bullied at school over her name, even though she was convinced it was a “very nice and common” one – because she’d chosen to call her Kevin.

She asked online: “My 12-year-old daughter named Kevin says that people bully her for her name. It’s a very nice and common name, so why do people bully her?”

Commenters on the post were quick to question the validity of the anonymous post, as many of them couldn’t believe someone would actually name their little girl Kevin. But on the off chance that the post wasn’t a joke, several commenters also gave helpful advice that pointed out exactly why the mum’s daughter might be getting picked on at school.

One person said: “Kevin is a predominantly male name. You should have known that when you named her. This one is on you. People bully her because while Kevin is a common name, it is not at all common for a girl to have that name and some kids are mean.”
