NASCAR at Charlotte live race updates, results, highlights from Bank of America Roval 400

For NASCAR Cup Series playoff drivers, there won’t be a bigger race so far this season than Sunday’s Bank of America Roval 400.

After Chase Elliott’s final-lap rally at Talladega last week, just seven spots are open for the Round of 8. The Charlotte playoff elimination race, then, represents a massive opportunity for those on the outside looking in.

One racer in a much better position — despite not racing particularly well last week — is Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron. Byron was docked 25 points after bumping into Denny Hamlin during a caution lap at the playoff race at Texas. After finishing 12th at Talladega last week, Byron sat in 10th place in the standings.

But his team filed an appeal of the penalty and NASCAR rescinded its punishment. He now sits in seventh place in the playoff standings, 14 points above the cut line.

That puts the pressure on racers like Austin Cindric and Chase Briscoe, who are 12 points adrift of eighth place.

All of this is to say, there’s a whole lot to race for Sunday afternoon.
