NASCAR at Martinsville live race updates, results, highlights from Xfinity 500

Denny Hamlin is one of the best racers in NASCAR history. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has won 48 Cup Series races in his career, third-most among active drivers. He has three Daytona 500 trophies to his name to go with a bevy of other accomplishments.

Yet, for all that Hamlin has achieved, there’s one piece of hardware missing from his trophy cabinet: a Cup Series championship trophy. He has gotten close — he has made it to the Championship 4 final race each of the past three years — but it just hasn’t been enough.

Hamlin has the second-most Cup Series wins for a non-championship winning driver, behind Junior Johnson. At five points out of a spot in the championship round, Hamlin’s opportunities to hoist the hardware in 2022 are rapidly dwindling.

But he has a chance. Sunday’s elimination race, the Xfinity 500, is taking place at Martinsville Speedway, a track where Hamlin has a history of success (he has won five times on the 0.526-mile oval).

The Paperclip has been the site of iconic races, from Darrell Waltrip’s last-lap rally over Dale Earnhardt and Terry Labonte in 1987 to Jeff Gordon’s last Cup Series win in 2015. Perhaps Hamlin, like legends of racing yesteryear, will add to the track’s glimmering legacy.

If he does, he stands to not just secure a spot in the Championship 4 for the fourth straight year but also put himself one step closer to racing immortality.
