- If you like rum, then this is the day, and week, for you!
August 16th was National Rum Day and these are all the drinks you should try to celebrate. Which drink do you want to enjoy first?
Long Island Iced Tea
Not sure you could call this a rum drink, per say. As it has about four different liqueurs in it, to start. However, rum being one of them, we’re going to add it to the list for drinks to have on National Rum Day.
Painkiller
This cocktail has dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut and a pinch of nutmeg. Have you ever had a painkiller cocktail? Known as a classic tiki cocktail, the painkiller was invented by bartender Daphne Henderson at her British Virgin Islands bar, The Soggy Dollar. (It was called this due to the only way to get there was to swim there. Shake the wet ingredients together and pour over ice. Add a shake of nutmeg to the top and enjoy!
Cable Car
This rum sour is elegant and delicious. Invented by Tony Abou-Ganim and named after the cable car tracks near the bar he worked at in San Francisco. Make this cocktail with spiced rum, lemon juice, curacao and simple syrup. Add it to a shared with ice and strain into a short cup rimmed with cinnamon and sugar.
Mai Tai
The first time this Mai Tai was served in Tahiti, someone exclaimed, “Mai tai-roa aé!” which translates to “Out of this world! The best!” The Mai Tai has rum, triple sec, lemon juice, lime juice, and amaretto. Add a garnish like a lime or lemon twist and enjoy this classic, delicious cocktail.
Mojito
Mojitos have rum, lime, mint and sugar. Just add ice and club soda and it’s ready! A lot of places serve flavored mojitos, which are delicious as well. Flavors like double lime, strawberry, blackberry, and even coconut make absolutely amazing mojitos.
Rum Punch
When rum punch became a thing, back in the 17th century, rum was the most accessible liquor for British sailors, especially in the Caribbean. Rum punch became the go to spirit, especially when it had citrus, sugar, spice and water added. When in Barbados, rum punch means simple syrup and Angostura bitters. Being that punch can pretty much be any juices, mixed, it’s easy enough to make your own version of rum punch. Will you have rum punch for national rum day?
Daiquiri
A daiquiri is a classic cocktail and as easy as rum, lime and sugar. Of course, there are tons of different flavored daiquiris, strawberry being one of the most common. There are also banana, watermelon, mango, pineapple, orange, coconut, and many more flavors!
Caipirinha
These mint-less mojitos aren’t even technically made with rum, let me explain. Caipirinha’s are made with cachaça, which is made from fresh sugar cane. For this drink, cut half a lime into wedges and muddle them with two tablespoons of sugar. Fill the rest of your glass with ice and add two ounces of cachaça.
Hurricane
The hurricanes is one of the most popular drinks in New Orleans that it’s also become one of the most iconic Mardi Gras drinks. Called the New Orleans-Style Hurricane Cocktail, make this drink with light rum, dark rum, passion fruit juice, orange juice, simple syrup and grenadine. Simply shake the ingredients together, pour over ice and garnish with some cherries and an orange slice.
Pina Colada
According to legend, the Pina Colada was invented by Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Confresi as a way to boost the ship’s morale. A Pina Colada is made with pineapple juice, cream of coconut and of course, rum. This drink is best blended with ice, so it comes out like an almost frozen drink and when garnished with a fresh slice of pineapple and cherries, it’s the perfect drink to celebrate rum day.
Rum and Root Beer
Unless you’ve had a dark (sweet) rum and root beer, don’t knock it. The sweetness of the dark rum and root beer is such a delicious combination. Not a root beer fan, try it with cream soda! Will you try this drink for National Rum Day?
