Need More Award Shows in Your Life? Netflix to Livestream SAG Awards

Netflix and SAG-AFTRA have inked a multi-year deal to livestream the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The partnership kicks off next month with a free-to-watch online broadcast of the Feb. 26 event via Netflix’s YouTube channel and accompanying social media promotions. The 2024 ceremony, meanwhile, will stream live on the platform’s paid subscription service.

“The SAG Awards are beloved by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these talented actors,” Bela Bajaria, Netflix head of global TV, said in a statement(Opens in a new window). “As we begin to explore live streaming on Netflix, we look forward to partnering with SAG-AFTRA to elevate and expand this special ceremony as a global live event in 2024 and the years to come.”

Netflix’s announcement came on Wednesday—the same day the 2023 SAG Awards nominees were revealed(Opens in a new window), led by The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once, each of which scored five nods, including best ensemble.

The streaming service itself has a number of entries on this year’s list, including The Crown, Ozark, and Stranger Things (the latter for stunt ensemble). It also collected noms for Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse), Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts (DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Julia Garner (Inventing Anna), Ana de Armas (Blonde), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), and Adam Sandler (Hustle).

Founded in 1952 to recognize outstanding performances in movie and primetime television, the SAG Awards have been telecast on TNT since 1998, and simulcast on TBS starting in 2007; the 2022 show was the networks’ last.

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting new partnership with Netflix and we look forward to expanding the global audience for our show,” according to SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. “As the only televised awards program exclusively honoring the performances of actors, whose work is admired by millions of fans, the SAG Awards are a unique and cherished part of the entertainment universe.”
