US Open favourite Nick Kyrgios continues his mission to win his first Grand Slam title in a quarter-final match against Russia’s Karen Khachanov.
While Kyrgios (23rd seed) and Khachanov (27th seed) are similarly ranked, the Australian is in the form of his life after reaching the final of Wimbledon.
This is the third time Khachanov has made the last eight of a slam – but he has never progressed past this point before.
The Sporting News runs the rule over what promises to be a blockbuster quarter-final.

Nick Kyrgios’ recent form
After such an inconsistent career until 2022, Kyrgios is currently favourite to win the US Open after making the final of Wimbledon in July.
His quarter-final defeat of world No.1 Daniil Medvedev meant he was the first player to beat the current best ranked competitor in the game twice in one year since 1987.
Medvedev is the reigning US Open champion and he had no answers as Kyrgios blasted him off the court with a mixture of power and guile.
So far at Flushing Meadows he has systematically destroyed Thanasi Kokkinakis and J.J Wolf in the first and third rounds respectively.
He did have a bit of trouble with unpredictable French talent Benjamin Bonzi in the second round, but got the job done in a good test of his mettle.
Kyrgios lead up form to the US Open was impressive too, winning the Citi Open in Washington.

Karen Khachanov’s recent form
Standing at 198cm, Khachanov possesses the power to go toe-to-toe with Kyrgios – but can he cope with the Australian in career-best form?
The Russian is arguably playing the best tennis of his life at the moment, reaching a quarter-final at a major for the third time – but this is as far as he has gone.
Khachanov has picked up impressive victories against Pablo Carreno Busta and Jack Draper in the previous two rounds but he also lost sets in both matches, a situation he needs to avoid against Kyrgios.
He also dropped one set in both his early round matches against Denis Kudla and Thiago Monteiro.
Interestingly, his pre-US Open form indicated struggles ahead, losing to Yoshihito Nishioka (Washington), Marin Cilic (Montreal) and Sebastian Korda (Cincinnati).
His previous Grand Slam quarter final results have been defeats to Dominic Thiem (French Open 2019) and Denis Shapovalov (Wimbledon 2021).

Nick Kyrgios vs. Karen Khachanov head-to-head record
Nick Kyrgios and Karen Khachanov have met on two occasions with the results shared 1-1.
Both meetings occurred on hard court at the round of 32 stage.
Kyrgios won in five sets at Australian Open 2020 6-2 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 6-7(7) 7-6(8), with four sets going to tiebreaks in an absolute thriller.
In 2019, Khachanov won their first meeting at the Cincinnati Masters 6-7(3) 7-6(4) 6-4, with two of the three sets needing a tiebreaker.
Nick Kyrgios vs. Karen Khachanov prediction
Incredibly, seven of the eight sets played between Kyrgios and Khachanov have gone to tiebreaks.
However, it’s a different Kyrgios in 2022 to the one that took the Russian on in previous years.
The Australian will be supremely confident after comfortably defeating world No.1 Medvedev in the previous round.
He has also only dropped two sets the entire tournament to date.
While Khachanov is in the form of his life, he is coming off a gruelling three-and-half-hour contest with Carreno Busta.
It will take a monumental performance by Khachanov to win this contest and would likely need to be aided by a Kyrgios meltdown.
Prediction: Kyrgios in four sets.
