Nvidia’s Shield TV will lose its native GameStream support in mid-February, 9To5Google reports(Opens in a new window).
GameStream dates back to 2013 and lets gamers who own a PC using an Nvidia GPU stream games from their computer to another device, such as a Shield TV, over a local network.
Shield TV, a media streamer from Nvidia, offers GameStream as a part of the pre-loaded Nvidia Games Android TV app. Starting next year, however, “a planned update to the Nvidia Games app will begin rolling out to Shield owners” that will remove the GameStream feature, according to an email sent to GameStream users.
If you don’t install the update, “GameStream may continue to work for a time, but will no longer be supported and eventually will stop working,” Nvidia says in an FAQ(Opens in a new window). “All other services supported by Nvidia Games, including GeForce NOW [game streaming] will require an app update to continue working.”
Nvidia recommends that Shield owners try the Steam Link to stream games from a PC to the Shield. “Steam Link supports 4K streaming and allows streaming to many devices, including PCs, phones, and tablets,” Nvidia notes. “Gamers can also stream PC games from the cloud to their Shield TV using Nvidia’s GeForce NOW service.”

For that to work, Steam needs to installed on your gaming PC, and the Steam Link app needs to be on your Shield TV.
Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment about why it was removing GameStream.
