Nvidia to Upgrade GeForce Now Game-Streaming Service to RTX 4080 GPUs

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is certainly expensive at $1,199 and up. But users will soon be able to rent access to it via the company’s game streaming service, GeForce Now.

At CES in Las Vegas, Nvidia announced it’s upgrading GeForce Now by using the RTX 4080 graphics technology to run games over the cloud service, which now has 25 million users. Specifically, RTX 4080 technology will soon replace RTX 3080 GPUs, which are currently used to power the highest GeForce Now membership tier.

Nvidia has decided to rebrand the highest tier plan as the “Ultimate” membership. But despite the upgrade, the price will remain unchanged at $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months.

The RTX 4080 technology promises to take the graphics on GeForce Now to the next level. According to Nvidia, the upgrade means users with an Ultimate membership can enjoy gaming at up to 240 frames per second, along with full ray tracing for realistic lighting and shadow effects.

The same GPU upgrade also promises to reduce the “click-to-pixel” latency to under 40 milliseconds for even better multiplayer experiences. This means if you fire a gun in a game, it should take less than 40 milliseconds for the action to take place.

The catch is that customers will need a fast internet connection to reap the full benefits of GeForce Now, which streams the game experience from Nvidia’s data centers to users’ devices. Currently, a 25Mbps internet connection is needed in order to game at 1080p, 60fps.

Nvidia will start rolling out RTX 4080 technology to its data centers later this month and expand access throughout North America and Western Europe during the quarter.

Those who are already subscribed to the highest GeForce Now tier will automatically receive access to the RTX 4080 technology. Nvidia currently operates over 30 data centers across the globe to power GeForce Now.
