Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Falls Below $1,000 Amid Steep GPU Price Cuts

What a difference a year makes. GPUs are now plentiful enough that retailers are dropping the price for Nvidia’s RTX 3090 to under $1,000.

On Amazon subsidiary Woot, you can find the Zotac RTX 3090 for $999.99(Opens in a new window), down from its $1,999 retail price. On Amazon, we’ve also seen price drops for the EVGA RTX 3090(Opens in a new window). It’s now just shy of $1,200, though it was $959.99 earlier today, so keep an eye on that listing for further price drops.

At either price point, that’s a huge change from a year ago when many RTX 3090 models were selling for over $2,000 at inflated prices amid the biggest GPU supply shortage in history. Since then, demand has taken a dive after a surge in buying from consumers and cryptocurrency miners leveled off.

You can find even bigger discounts for Nvidia’s RTX 3090 Ti, which originally launched in March starting at $1,999. In some cases, retailers are slashing the costs by almost half. For example, Best Buy is selling the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition model for $1,099(Opens in a new window)

The price cuts arrive as Nvidia is preparing to launch the next-generation RTX 4000 series in the coming months. But before the company does so, it first wants to clear out existing GPU supplies at retailers after struggling over the past year to address rampant demand.

During an earnings call, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said: “We’ve also instituted programs to price position our current products to prepare for next-generation products. We’re working toward a path to being in good shape going into next year.”

The steep price cuts are certainly a good deal. But on the downside, you’ll be buying a two-year-old product when next-generation GPUs are right around the corner. So it may be better to wait. But don’t be surprised if the RTX 4000 series launches with high prices.
