Patreon Launches Long-Awaited Video-Hosting Feature

Patreon has finally released its own video-hosting feature—a year after first teasing it.

Patreon Video is rolling out to eligible creators who can, at no additional cost through 2023, upload HD clips directly to the membership platform while maintaining “complete ownership” over their work and who sees it.

“Whether you’re giving a quick behind-the-scenes update or dropping the latest full episode of your exclusive series, Patreon Video opens the door for you to be your most authentic, creative self,” the company says(Opens in a new window).

Those with Pro or Premium plans and an account in good standing set to the All Audiences category may qualify for 500 hours of uploaded videos, free through the end of next year, after which new pricing will be introduced. Early access creators get an additional six months to use their 500 hours; videos uploaded during this time will not expire and there are no extra costs to keep them online, even after 2023.

“You won’t lose access to these videos, and your patrons will still be able to stream them,” the company said. “You’ll also continue to have the option to link or embed videos from other platforms.”

Users can take advantage of functions like patron-only video previews. You control the clip length and cover image, creating a sort of teaser to share on social media and encouraging people to unlock the full recording by subscribing.

“There are no ads, no trolls in the comments, and you never have to worry about ending up on the wrong side of the algorithm,” according to Patreon, which not-so-subtly hinted at the perceived downsides of video-sharing networks like YouTube and Instagram. “It’s just you, your work, and the people who love what you make.”
