Pelicans vs. Nets live score, updates, highlights from Zion Williamson, Ben Simmons return game

Wednesday night’s game between the Pelicans and Nets marks the return of two of the most exciting young players in the NBA.

New Orleans forward Zion Williamson will take the floor for the first time since May 4, 2021. The 22-year-old sat out the entirety of last season because of a foot injury, but he is finally off the team’s injury report and ready to rock the rim.

Ben Simmons will make his regular season debut for the Nets after being sent from Philadelphia to Brooklyn in February. The three-time All-Star last played in a non-exhibition game on June 20, 2021, sitting out the 2021-22 regular season and the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

“Slowly getting back to who I am and who I’m supposed to be,” Simmons said ahead of the season opener (via ESPN’s Nick Friedell). “Still taking a lot of time. I’ve only played four [preseason] games — but over time I’m going to get there.”

Halftime: Pelicans 58, Nets 50

8:45 p.m. — You may have heard this story before, but Kevin Durant is saving the Nets. The two-time NBA Finals MVP has 21 points in 18 minutes.

8:35 p.m. — Good luck trying to defend this Brandon Ingram fadeaway jumper.

8:25 p.m. — Herb Jones with the go-go-gadget-arms block on Kevin Durant’s 3-point attempt:

8:20 p.m. — Nets coach Steve Nash is hoping that his bench can provide some energy. He can always rely on Cam Thomas to be aggressive with the ball in his hands.

End of first quarter: Pelicans 32, Nets 14

8:10 p.m. — What a dominant quarter for the Pelicans. They destroyed the Nets on the glass, grabbing seven offensive rebounds. Brooklyn must take better care of the ball after committing nine turnovers in the opening frame.

8:05 p.m. — Ben Simmons scores his first points as a member of the Nets, but Brooklyn’s offense is… not great so far. The Pelicans are controlling the pace and style of play.

7:55 p.m. — Zion Williamson is looking like the guy that Pelicans fans saw during the 2020-21 season. He already has four points, two rebounds and one assist.

7:45 p.m. — And here we go. The Nets win the opening tip, but they turn the ball over on their first possession.
