Have you ever wondered why there’s a tiny hole in the top of your ballpoint pens? Well if you have and didn’t know the answer, then you weren’t alone…
Many people have recently only just discovered the truth about their pen lids, thanks to a YouTuber named Zach D.
With over two million followers, Zach has gone viral with a video clip explaining why pen manufacturers put a hole at the very top of the lid. Zach D In the clip he explains that a lot of people tend to think that the hole is at the top of the pen lid for some reason to do with the ink or something similar.
However, the real reason is actually a lot more important and could be a matter of life and death.

He explained that the real reason for the hole at the top of the is to allow airflow should the pen lid get swallowed and trapped in the throat.
In the video clip which went viral he said: “Pen companies are actually required to add these little holes. You see, there’s just enough space for airflow if the cap gets stuck in someone’s throat.”
The video also shows a diagram of the skeletal x-ray and how crucial this little hole could be to allowing air flow if the lid is swallowed, which could be a real lifesaver.
The clip has been seen by over three million people and has got quite the reaction from many people.
In response many were shocked by these revelations as person wrote: “I remember chewing this pen cap during my childhood.”
While another said: “‘Wow hopefully that never happens to anyone.”
However, others were quick to say they already knew this tip as one wrote: “‘I thought this was common knowledge.”
