Whether you’re getting married or attending a wedding, the vows are one of the most exciting parts of the day. Individual to each couple, they’re a fantastic way for the newlyweds to share their love for each other with their nearest and dearest.
The guests know and cherish the couple, and most likely know their sense of humour – but sometimes these speeches can backfire. A tweet recently went viral after a family member revealed that a groom called the bride a ‘bully’ in his speech. People were up in arms over the vows – but they’d completely missed the context, according to the bride’s sister.
She tweeted: “My sister got married yesterday and the groom started his vows with “Kate, you are a bully” and proceeded to give like 50 examples of how she’s bullied him in the last 10 years, and then he said “but you are MY bully, and I love you for it” and I started bawling. Love is real.”
She continued the thread with another tweet that read: “Obviously I’m leaving out a lot here but they both had beautiful genuine and loving vows, they’ve been through so much together and support each other and love each other and I am so so so so happy for them. If you need me I’ll be crying in the corner for the next 5 days.”
Unfortunately, however, not everybody saw the funny side and jumped to the worst conclusions, despite the fact the woman described her sister and her husband as in a ‘happy and in healthy relationship’.
Someone claimed that there were ‘red flags’ to consider, as they wrote: “The relationship includes criticism (which he chose to do in his vows) and contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling (which may be interpreted as bullying). No matter how much they love each other, these communication styles signal a short marriage.”
The sister responded by defending the newlyweds though, writing: “You were not at the wedding also you don’t know these people.”
One jibed: “I do not find bullying or being mean to your partner cute lmao.”
Another defended the couple, commenting: “Y’all judging a couple you know NOTHING about, who have been together 10 years. Do you not have fun and goof with each other in your relationships?! I joke that my Yorkie bullies me but it’s called an exaggeration???”
When a Twitter user referred to the relationship as ‘toxic’, the bride’s sister wrote: “Tell me exactly how and tell me exactly what you heard him say in his speech about why he loves her and tell me what you know about their 10 year dynamic with each other and quick.” Well, that showed them!
