Everyone knows the Macarena and can probably remember singing it while dancing with friends or maybe even your family, but it turns out the lyrics are a bit raunchy

People have just discovered what the lyrics to the Macarena are

Everybody knows the Macarena yet no one really knows the lyrics, and it turns out that it might be a good thing we’re all blissfully unaware of what we’re dancing to. The dance is cherished and brought out at school discos and family parties, while everyone taking part tries to mumble along with the words.

But it turns out the lyrics are of a slightly adult nature, and not the sort of thing you’d want to be singing while dancing with you family. Unless you spoke fluent Spanish as a child it’s likely all these lyrics will have been lost of you – so we’ve translated them for you below.

If you recall, the chorus goes:

“Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena/Que tu cuerpo es pa’ darle alegría cosa Buena/Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena.”

This means “Give your body some joy, Macarena, ’cause your body is for giving joy and good things to it.”

“Joy” and “good things” in this instance don’t mean “ice cream” because the song is basically about a woman who does the dirty on her boyfriend with his two best friends while he’s being drafted into the army.

The rest of the lyrics, which are in English, are basically jam-packed with sexual innuendo which may have gone over your innocent head as a child because you were too busy dancing.

“They all want me/They can’t have me/So they all come and dance beside me/Move with me/Chant with me/And if you’re good, I’ll take you home with me.

“But don’t you worry about my boyfriend/He’s a boy who’s name is Victorino/I don’t want him//Couldn’t stand him/He was no good so I/Now come on, what was I supposed to do?/He was out of town and his two friends were so fine.”

Now, people have been revisiting the song as adults and sharing their horror at the lyrics on Twitter.

One woman also added: “Just learned that the lyrics to Macarena aren’t ‘one maca two maca three macarena… I cannot be the only one who thought this though…”

She’s not, because we thought this for years too.
