Police: Man who fled Southern California collision dies when car crashes again

A person who Corona police say fled a traffic collision on Thursday, July 27, died when his car caught fire after again crashing.

The driver, described as a man, had not been publicly identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as of July 31.

The crashes happened between 6:45 and 7 p.m. The first happened at the intersection of River Road and Lincoln Avenue, said Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis, who did not have information on how that collision happened or whether anyone was injured.

A witness told police that one of the drivers did not stop. The witness followed the car, a Chevrolet Tahoe, the approximate one mile from the intersection of River Road and Lincoln Avenue to the intersection of Rincon Street and N. Smith Street. There, Kouroubacalis said, the driver went past road-closed signs and smashed through yellow metal barricades protecting a construction zone. The driver stopped, and his car caught fire. He died at the scene.

The driver’s cause of death has not been announced.

Police ask anyone with information on the crash to contact Officer Jacob Westall at 951-817-5784 or [email protected].
