Portugal vs South Korea final score, result, highlights: Late Hwang strike sends South Korea into Round of 16

Hwang Hee-chan’s late strike sealed a comeback victory to send South Korea into the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on goals scored ahead of Uruguay.

Paulo Bento’s side fell behind early on when Ricardo Horta stroked home Diogo Dalot’s cross to put Portugal, who had already secured their place in the knockout stages after wins over Ghana and Uruguay, in the ascendancy.

But South Korea, knowing only a win would give them any hope of progressing, responded well and Kim Young-gwon lashed home an equalizer in the 27th minute after Portugal had failed to clear a corner.

As the second half progressed, with Uruguay leading Ghana 2-0 in the other group game, South Korea knew that one goal would see them overhaul Luis Suarez and company into second place.

And in the 91st minute, they counter-attacked after a Portugal corner and Son Heung-min raced clear, before slipping a pass into substitute Hwang, who finished superbly.

South Korea still had to wait around nine minutes until the Uruguay-Ghana match concluded before their qualification behind Group H leaders Portugal was confirmed — and a probable last-16 meeting with Brazil.

Portugal vs South Korea as it happend, highlights from 2022 World Cup

IT’S ALL OVER! SOUTH KOREA HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE ROUND OF 16!

They’re into the ninth minute of time added on in the other match, and Uruguay are lining up a free-kick…

FULLTIME: Portugal 1 South Korea 2

They’ve done it! South Korea have found the victory they needed and put themselves on the brink of qualification…unless Uruguay can find a goal in six more minutes of added time against Ghana.

90th min+6: We’re into the final minute of added time…

90th min+3: A reminder that goal means South Korea are going through as things stand — unless Uruguay score again against Ghana. We’ll keep you posted…

90th min+1: GOAL FOR SOUTH KOREA! Incredible! Swift counter-attack from a Portugal corner sees Son race clear. He shows great composure as the Portuguese defenders close in, slipping in Hwang Hee-chan to slide his shot under the keeper!

Watch it if you’re in the USA:

Watch it if you’re in the UK:

89th min: It’s actually Portugal on the attack as we enter the last few minutes, with Joao Cancelo weaving his way down the left before his cross is diverted for a corner.

84th min: A reminder that South Korea just need one goal to lift themselves above Uruguay into second place in Group H. They have a corner that Cho Gue-sung gets his head to, but it flicks away to safety.

81st min: Portugal also making a double substitution, Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho on for Vitinha and Joao Mario.

80th min: Hwang Ui-jo and Son Jun-ho are on, Kim Young-gwon and Lee Kang-in are off.

79th min: Double change for South Korea coming up…

76th min: Diogo Dalot must have given himself a chance of starting the knockout stages with his performance today. Nice little stepover on the right and puts in a low cross, but none of his team-mates can get on the end of it.

74th min: Free-kick in a decent position for South Korea. Son and Lee Kang-in are over it, but the latter curls it over the top with his left foot.

70th min: Son at the back post! The Spurs star strikes his right-foot volley sweetly, but Joao Cancelo gets his body in the way to deflect it for a corner. Half a suggestion of handball, but it struck him on the side of his chest.

Watch it if you’re in Canada:

67th min: Good strike from distance from Hwang In-Beom, but Diogo Costa is equal to it. Can South Korea find the goal that might secure their passage to the Round of 16?

65th min: And there’s the change for South Korea, Hwang on for Lee Jae-sung.

64th min: Triple change for Portugal, with Andre Silva, Rafael Leao and Joao Palhinha on. Cristiano Ronaldo is coming off, along with Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes.

62nd min: South Korea are readying Wolves man Hwang Hee-chan, who has struggled for fitness, to come on.

55th min: South Korea on the counter-attack. Measured pass from Cho Gue-sung finds Son and he gets a shot off, but Antonio Silva – calm as you like – gets back to steer it out for a corner.

Watch if you’re in Canada:

51st min: Lovely ball in behind the South Korea defence from Vitinha to Ronaldo, who mis-kicks with his left foot. But the Portugal superstar was marginally offside in any case.

46th min: Portugal get us back underway in the second half.

That first half was clearly a frustrating experience for suspended South Korea coach Paolo Bento, who had to watch from the stands.

HALFTIME: Portugal 1-1 South Korea

Portugal went in front early through Ricardo Horta but South Korea have responded well and Kim Young-gwon’s equalizer keeps their hopes alive. Uruguay, who lead Ghana 2-0, have moved into second spot as things stand. But South Korea only need to score once to qualify ahead of Uruguay on goals scored. Portugal only need a point to secure top spot.

45th min: We’ll have two minutes of time added on.

44th min: Sensational bit of skill and close control in a confined space on the edge of the area from Vitinha, who’s coming more into this game. The ball finds Ricardo Horta, but he snatches it at his shot and it goes wide.

42nd min: Great strike from Vitinha, one of the players brought into the Portugal side today. Kim Seung-gyu can only parry it and Ronaldo is there, sniffing a goal, and gets a head to it. But he can’t quite twist his neck quickly enough to direct it goalwards.

39th min: Lovely control from Son before moving the ball onto his left foot, but the strike is straight at Diogo Costa.

34th min: Diogo Dalot tries his luck from long range, with his left foot, and Kim Seung-gyu beats it away for a corner. Bit of power behind that.

32nd min: It’s now 2-0 to Uruguay in the other game in Group H.

30th min: Chance for Ronaldo? He tries to flick it past Kim Seung-gyu with the outside of his right boot, but the South Korea keeper makes the save. Ronaldo was offside, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

28th min: More good news for South Korea’s qualification hopes as Uruguay have taken the lead against Ghana.

27th min: SOUTH KOREA ARE LEVEL! Portugal don’t deal with an inswinging corner, it falls to Kim Young-gwon at the far post and the defender lashes it home with his left foot.

Watch it if you’re in the USA:

Watch it if you’re in Canada:

23rd min: Cracking ball from Matheus Nunes searching out Ronaldo, making a run to the far post, but Kim Young-gwon gets a foot in in the nick of time.

21st min: News from the other final-round game in Group H.  Andre Ayew has missed a penalty for Ghana against Uruguay.  But the west African nation are still going through in second place behind Portugal, as things stand.

16th min: Goal for South Korea? No. The assistant referee’s flag is swiftly up. Son Heung-min curls in a lovely ball to the far post which gets a flick-on and Kim Jin-su taps it home into an unguarded net, but the defender was clearly offside.

14th min: Joao Cancelo hasn’t been at his imperious best so far at this World Cup, but having switched from rightback today to the usual leftback role he plays for Manchester City, he’s looking more like his usual self. Cancelo beats Kim Moon-hwan with a lovely bit of skill on the left byline before drilling in a cross with his right foot that goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu beats away.

10th min: So a disastrous start for South Korea in a game they must win to have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16. Portugal don’t tend to lose too many games either once they get their noses in front. But still early days…

5th min: GOAL FOR PORTUGAL! Great run and cross from Diogo Dalot after he is found by Pepe on the right flank, and Ricardo Horta finishes it superbly at the near post. That’s his second international goal on his first major tournament start.

3rd min: A reminder that South Korea coach Paulo Bento is not on the sidelines today after receiving a red card after the whistle against Ghana, so his assistant coach Sergio Costa is the one issuing the instructions.

1st min: We’re underway at  the Education City Stadium.

5 mins from kickoff: It’s time for the anthems. Kickoff fast approaching…

10 mins from kickoff: The teams are making their way onto the pitch for the pre-match ceremonies.

15 mins from kickoff: So what are the odds on Cristiano Ronaldo extending his world record tally of international goals today? The 37-year-old superstar has 118 to his name for Portugal, but only three in his last 11 caps.

But one of those came in their opening win against Ghana, and he had another taken off him during their second group game against Uruguay, when officials decided a Bruno Fernandes cross had not actually touched his forehead.

30 mins from kickoff: A few stats for you as we build towards kickoff:

  • This will be the second meeting between these two sides at the World Cup. The only other clash back in 2002 saw South Korea win 1-0 in the group stage.
  • Portugal are looking to make it three group-stage wins in a single tournament for just the third time after 1966 and 2006.
  • After suffering defeat against Ghana last time out, South Korea have now won just one of their past seven World Cup matches.

45 mins from kickoff: Here is the South Korea team. It features three changes, with Kwon Kyung-won, Lee Jae-sung and Lee Kang-in coming into the side, replacing Kim Min-jae , Jeong Woo-yeong and Kwon Chang-hoon.

1 hr 10 mins from kickoff: Portugal team news! Ronaldo starts, but neither Bruno Fernandes not Bernardo Silva do as Fernando Santos makes six changes in all to his starting XI.

Diogo Dalot, Andre Silva, Matheus Nunes, Vitinha, Joao Mario and Ricardo Horta all come into the side, with Ruben Dias, the injured Nuno Mendes, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix all dropping out.

1 hr 30 mins from kickoff: “We know the difficulties the game will bring because it is a high-quality opponent,” Portugal head coach Fernando Santos told the media.

“In the two games they played, they’ve been tremendous – but the results did not follow. The principles are very clear and have a lot to do with what Paulo Bento is… he puts a lot of players up front with high wingers and, until the last minute, they fight hard.”

2 hrs from kickoff: Portugal on their morning stroll. A reminder: they will win the group unless they lose and Ghana win while overturning a three-goal inferiority in goal difference.

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Bento has done the requisite talking up of South Korea’s prospects of pulling off the shock they need today in order to have a chance of progressing.

“I’ve worked for a long time with the players,” he said. “We have competent staff and I am confident they will do what is needed. All the staff are in line with our work and, actually, many decisions are taken during the matches by them. The players are also in line with the technical staff. I trust them and don’t think it will be a problem.”

3 hrs from kickoff: Pepe remembers South Korea head coach Paulo Bento from his spell as Portugal manager between 2010 and 2014.

“I know what he asks for,” said the defender, who expects South Korea to be very organised and have “a lot of quality”. “He’s a coach who prizes the collective.”

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Spot-on Portugal can make history if they add to Cristiano Ronaldo’s spot kick against Ghana and Bruno Fernandes following suit against Uruguay.

No team has ever scored a penalty in each of their three group stage matches in the World Cup.

4 hrs from kickoff: Portugal could make it four wins in a row today. They’ve also kept clean sheets in three of their last five matches.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Cho Gue-sung scored twice for South Korea against Ghana last time out, accounting for two of his six total international goals.

No player has ever scored three goals in a single edition of the World Cup for the Asian side.

5 hrs from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of this final Group H match between Portugal and South Korea. The Portuguese are already through, and there is some debate as to exactly whether we will see these two play today, but South Korea don’t have the luxury of resting any of their stars. They need to win, and win big, if they are to have any hope of progress. Stick with us for the next few hours as we bring you all the build-up and action!

Portugal vs. South Korea lineups, team news

Portugal boss Fernando Santos has hinted that he could leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of his team to face South Korea.

With a place in the knockout stages already assured and Ronaldo having sat out a training session ahead of the game, he may join a number of stars in missing out on a place in a rotated selection on Friday.

“Let’s see. In principle, Ronaldo will train soon,” Santos said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was replaced in both games. There’s a plan in case Cristiano can’t play. There is no player guaranteed to play all the time. It would hardly run if we didn’t have a plan.”
