Portugal vs Uruguay live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group H match as Fernandes opens scoring

Portugal can officially qualify for the Round of 16 if they can defeat Uruguay in a matchup of Group H favorites.ย

Fernando Santos’ side held on to defeat Ghana 3-2 in one of the more entertaining group openers, and another three points would see them through to the next round and in pole position to win the group.

Meanwhile, Uruguay were held to a dour 0-0 draw against South Korea and will be desperate to jumpstart their attack led by Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, and former Anfield star Luis Suarez. But the forward duo didn’t get much in the way of service against South Korea.

Portugal have plenty of attacking flair and showed it off against Ghana, with Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first player to score in five World Cup tournaments. They’ll be challenged by Uruguay’s stingy defenders but would love nothing more than to dish out some payback for the Round of 16 elimination suffered at the hands of La Celeste four years ago.

Portugal vs Uruguay live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

85 mins: Just as if it looked like Uruguay were working up a head of steam ahead of the closing stages, Portugal have managed to slow the tempo and check their momentum.

82 mins: Ronaldo, Joao Felix and William Carvalho depart for Portugal. Joao Palhinha, Goncalo Ramos and Matheus Nunes are all on.

(US only)

81 mins: Solid work from Joao Cancelo, beating Luis Suarez to a right-wing cross, but Uruguay are going for it now.

79 mins:ย Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s turn to be denied, Diogo Costa springing to his right to push away what is in truth an underhit shot after Federico Valverde’s pass had sprung the defence.

77 mins: All hands to the pump for Portugal now, Joao Felix going into the book for a trip on Luis Suarez, who certainly let the referee know he’d been fouled there. From the free-kick, played in with pace by Giorgian de Arrascaeta, the ball breaks for Suarez who fires just wide.

POST! 75 mins: Maxi Gomez is really unlucky here, Facundo Pellestri’s direct running giving Portugal a headache and only the upright keeping out his fellow substitute’s curling effort.

(US only)

72 mins: As time starts to run out for Uruguay, they change their front two; Darwin Nunez and Edinson Cavani are off, Luis Suarez and Maxi Gomez on.

69 mins: Ruben Neves, who still isn’t moving brilliantly after that heavy tackle about 15 minutes ago, makes way for Rafael Leao, who came on to score in the first game against Ghana.

65 mins: While Uruguay continue to press for an equaliser, an update on the goal; FIFA have reviewed it and decided there’s NO TOUCH from Ronaldo, so it’s Bruno Fernandes who gets the credit.

63 mins: Some good fortune for Diogo Costa now, the Portugal goalkeeper taking too long over his clearance and fortunate to see the ricochet off Federico Valverde spin away from his goal.

62 mins: Double change for Uruguay, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Facundo Pellistri coming on for Diego Godin and Matias Vecino.

60 mins: Uruguay clearly trying to rouse themselves after going behind, Darwin Nunez driving a shot straight at Diogo Costa from outside the penalty area.

58 mins: That’s a decent half-chance for Edinson Cavani, whose movement takes him away from Pepe but, having created the space, he misses his kick.

57 mins: Ronaldo is down after being challenged by Darwin Nunez, but it looked like the Uruguay striker took the ball.

GOAL! 54 mins: He’s done it again! Bruno Fernandes collects the ball on the left and Ronaldo, played onside byย Guillermo Varela, ghosts in ahead of the defence to flick a header past Sergio Rochet!

(US only)

ย 52 mins: Close! Uruguay lose the ball on halfway and suddenly Portugal are pouring forward, Bernardo Silva playing on Joao Felix on the left side. His first touch takes him a little wide, however, and the shot flies just the wrong side of the near upright and into the sidenetting with Bruno Fernandes screaming for a pass at the far post.

51 mins: Ruben Neves needed a lengthy spell of treatment after that foul, and limps off before coming back on. Looks like he might have twisted his knee as he landed.

49 mins: Two fouls for the price of one here, Matias Vecino tripping Ruben Neves before Mathias Olivera, already on a yellow card, goes through Joao Felix. The definition of pushing your luck, that.

46 mins: Portugal front pair Ronaldo and Joao Felix get us going again, with no changes from either side. Will we get a change of approach from either?

HALFTIME: Portugal have had most of the ball but Uruguay had the outstanding chance, through Rodrigo Bentacur. Neither side has really done enough in an attacking sense just yet.

45 mins: We will have three additional minutes at the end of this first half.

44 mins: Mathias Olivera is the latest player in the book in what has been a niggly first half, blocking Bruno Fernandes as the Portugal midfielder tries to take a quick free-kick.

42 mins: Nuno Mendes is in some distress as he walks off. Raphael Guerreiro comes on to take his place.

(US only)

40 mins: Nuno Mendes, who was a doubt for this game withย a muscle injury, goes down and needs a long spell of treatment. Doesn’t look too good.

37 mins: Is the game opening up? Portugal’s turn to threaten now, great awareness from Ronaldo allowing the ball to drop over the head of his marker and controlling on his chest, but it won’t drop quickly enough to get a shot away and he’s crowded out.

35 mins: Rodrigo Bentacur is suddenly looking Uruguay’s main threat, getting on the end of a low Mathias Olivera cross from the left. He can’t connect cleanly this time and the ball dribbles behind.

33 mins: There’s the chance! Rodrigo Bentacur picks the ball up just inside his own half and drives at the heart of the Portugal defence, somehow wriggling through three markers to find himself with only Diogo Costa to beat. The goalkeeper spreads himself and Bentacur’s shot thuds into his body.

(US only)

31 mins: A little more promising for Uruguay now, with more support for the front two and a sustained spell of possession, albeit without ever threatening to find a way through the Portugal defence.

28 mins: Uruguay have put virtually nothing together as an attacking force so far, with Darwin Nunez and Edinson Cavani starved of service.

25 mins: It looks like a Portugal goal is only a matter of time as Nuno Mendes whips in a low left-wing cross that Bernardo Silva narrowly fails to control. He might have been better leaving that for Joao Felix behind him.

22 mins: Portugal asking all the questions so far, with Uruguay’s 3-5-2 more closely resembling a 8-0-2 for much of the time.

Ronaldo’s left-wing cross prompts another spell of Portugal pressure with the South American side pressed back inside their own area, but the weight of numbers holds Portugal at bay.

19 mins: Portugal dominating both possession and territory at the moment. Been a shaky start from Uruguay.

16 mins: Ronaldo has been full of tricks and flicks already this evening, producing a quick flurry of stepovers down the left before laying off the ball. Rolling back the years there.

Portugal definitely look the more dangerous, Joao Felix’s shot hitting Jose Maria Gimenez and looping behind.

13 mins: Feisty start to this one and Rodrigo Bentacur is treading a fine line here already. He hauls down Ruben Neves having already been booked, which didn’t escape the notice of the Portugal players. The Tottenham man needs to calm down and quickly.

11 mins: A first chance for Darwin Nunez to stretch his legs, three defenders occupied by the Liverpool forward, who wins a corner down the left. Jose Maria Gimenez rises highest to meet it, but the ball loops on to the top of the net.

7 mins: Nice crossfield ball from Nuno Mendes finds Ronaldo on the right, and an impeccable climb brings a knockdown for Bruno Fernandes, who drags a shot wide from 25m.

6 mins: Uruguay concede three free-kicks in just over a minute, the last, for a Rodrigo Bentacur foul on Ruben Dias, bringing an early yellow card.

3 mins: Mathรญas Olivera with the first sight of goal, the Uruguay wing-back playing the ball into Edinson Cavani and accepting the return pass only to lash over from the edge of the area.

4 mins: Still got it! Ronaldo produces a remarkable layoff with his shoulder to William Carvalho just inside the penalty area, but the Portugal midfielder cannot keep his volley down.

(US only)

KICKOFF: Darwin Nunez gets us off and running, and Uruguay will have the ball to start with.

3 mins to kickoff: What a setting for this one!

5 mins to kickoff: The teams emerge on to the pitch, and it’s time for the last of the pre-match formalities.

10 mins to kickoff:ย Something has to give tonight. While Portugal have lost only one of their last 13 group games at the World Cup (W7 D5), Uruguay have kept five successive clean sheets in the group stage; no one has ever managed six in a row.

A worrying omen for Portugal, who have won just one of their last nine meetings with South American nations in all competitions (D3 L5), beating Argentina 1-0 in a friendly in November 2014.

15 mins to kickoff: All eyes on Portugal’s main man as ever.

(US only)

20 mins to kickoff: Portugal’s sole win against Uruguay is a 3-0 friendly success in a warmup for the 1966 World Cup, Jose Augusto Torres hitting a hattrick in Basel.

25 mins to kickoff: The Uruguay warmup is in full swing:

30 mins: This is only the third meeting between the sides, their 2-18 last=16 tie their first fixture since 1972. Uruguay came out on top four years ago, Edinson Cavani’s double either side of a Pepe equaliser taking them into the quarter-finals.

35 mins: Portugal fans settling into Lusail Stadium and making themselves at home:

45 mins from kickoff: You might say there’s a relaxed mood among the Uruguay squad!

50 mins from kickoff: Three changes apiece tonight, with Pepe and Nuno Mendes starting in defence for Portugal and William Carvalho coming into midfield.

Sebastian Coates comes into the Uruguay defence, which is now a back three, while Edinson Cavani starts up front in preference to Luis Suarez.

La Celeste advanced and lost to eventual champions France in the quarters, a match that scoring hero Cavani missed through injury.

Portugal vs Uruguay lineups, team news

Portugal central defender Danilo Pereira, who started and played the full 90 minutes against Ghana alongside Ruben Dias, suffered a triple rib fracture during Saturday training. Reports are that he’ll be out for the group stage. His replacement is 39-year-old Pepe.

Playmaker Otavio, who started against South Korea, has been experiencing muscle issues that have prevented him from training normally with the team and William Carvalho replaces him in midfield, although Nuno Mendes is fit to start despite a similar problem.ย

Portugal (4-2-3-1, right to left): 22-Diogo Costa (GK)ย โ€” 20-Cancelo, 3-Pepe, 4-Dias, 19-Mendes โ€” 14-Carvalho, 18-Neves โ€” 10-B. Silva, 8-B. Fernandes, 11-Felix โ€”ย 7-Ronaldo

There are no injuries to speak of for Uruguay, but coach Diego Alonso has modified his lineup from a four-man backline to a five-man setup with Sebastian Coates coming in as one of the three center-backs and two wing-backs (Guillermo Varela and Mathias Olivera). Edinson Cavani got the nod up front ahead of Luis Suarez.

Uruguay (3-5-2, right to left): 23-Rochet (GK)ย โ€” 19-Coates, 3-Godin, 2-Gimenez โ€” 13-Varela, 6-Bentancur, 15-Valverde, 5-Vecino, 16-Olivera โ€” 11-Nunez, 21-Cavani
