Ratko Mladić: The Commander of the Bosnian Serb Army’s Crimes

Date:

Ratko Mladić, the former Commander of the Bosnian Serb army, is responsible for the brutal campaign of ‘ethnic cleansing’ that occurred in Bosnia in the 1990s. Mladić’s forces killed and maimed thousands of civilians, including women and children, in the pursuit of creating a Greater Serbia.

As the war spilled over into Bosnia, Mladić’s force switched uniforms and pledged support for the breakaway Republika Srpska. He saw the Muslim population as invaders, the result of an ancient occupation by Ottoman Turks, and vowed to right what he considered a historical injustice.

The Siege of Sarajevo

The longest city siege in modern warfare, the siege of Sarajevo lasted 1,425 days. Mladić’s forces dug in on surrounding hillsides, killing and maiming 13,000 citizens with shell-fire or sniper bullets. The city’s infrastructure was severely damaged, with almost every building either damaged or destroyed.

Legions of men were killed or carted off to prison camps, while thousands of women were mercilessly raped. A communiqué from Mladić’s headquarters captured his attitude, instructing his soldiers to ‘shoot at slow intervals until I order you to stop’ and ‘target Muslim neighbourhoods – not many Serbs live there.’

Why this story matters for an international audience

The atrocities committed by Ratko Mladić and the Bosnian Serb army are a sobering reminder of the dangers of ethnic nationalism and the importance of international cooperation in preventing such crimes. The international community’s failure to prevent the Srebrenica massacre and its aftermath raises important questions about the effectiveness of international intervention and the accountability of those responsible for such crimes.

Mladić’s crimes are a stain on the history of Europe, and his conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, even in the face of overwhelming evidence of their guilt.
