Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League last season and they’re showing no signs of slowing down in 2022/23. Los Merengues have enjoyed a perfect start to the new season on all fronts as they welcome German side RB Leipzig to the Bernabeu in the second matchday of the Champions League group stage.
Real Madrid have won all seven matches they have played so far, including last week’s Champions League group stage opener at Celtic Park in Scotland (3-0). Top scorer Karim Benzema picked up an injury in that match, but they haven’t missed a beat without their captain. Vinicius Jr. and Brazilian compatriot Rodrygo have picked up the slack in recent matches.
RB Leipzig were upset in a 4-1 home loss to Shakhtar Donetsk on Matchday 1 of the group stage and that cost manager Domenico Tedesco his job. He was replaced by former Borussia Dortmund boss Marco Rose, who promptly recorded a 3-0 win against his former club over the weekend.
The Germans hope that the Bundesliga result kickstarts their season — they sit in 10th place in the Bundesliga standings, but only six points out of first place — and the good vibes carry over to the Bernabeu, where they will try to execute on their quickfire transitions to hurt the Madridistas, with speedy forward Timo Werner likely to have a prominent role.
