Roblox 101: How To Make Real Money From Your Video Games

Anyone who knows about Roblox, knows about Robux. It’s the platform’s currency, and it’s used to purchase items, access, and other miscellaneous items. And any parent whose kids play Roblox, knows the “can I have Robux?” question. However, did you know that the Roblox games you create can generate real-world money? The stories are different from one developer to the next, but it is possible to make a real-world living with virtual-world money.

There are many ways to make money with Roblox, including charging for game access, selling game passes for special powers, or selling in-game currency. However, before we explore those options, please note that your game or item’s popularity drives revenue. Simply putting content up for sale doesn’t mean you’re destined to become a millionaire. Granted, it’s possible, but those cases are rare. Making big bucks with Roblox requires hard work and dedication.

Are you ready to learn how to generate cold, hard cash with Roblox? Let’s get started.

Roblox Dev Ex

1. Create a DevEx Account

In order to transform the virtual currency you receive into dollars and cents, you must sign up for a Developer Exchange account. DevEx lets creators cash out their Robux at a set rate. Currently, 100,000 Robux nets you $350 USD. Roblox also requires that you meet the following requirements to cash out:

  • Be at least 13 years of age or older

  • Have at least 30,000 Earned Robux (defined below) in your account

  • Have a Roblox-verified email address

  • Have a valid DevEx portal account

  • Have an IRS Form W-9 (for U.S. Taxpayers) or W-8 (for non-U.S. taxpayers) on file with Roblox

  • Comply with the Ongoing Service Requirements for Developers (described below); and

  • Be in complete compliance at all times with the Roblox Terms of Use, which include these DevEx Terms and the Roblox Community Standards. By way of example, the following will disqualify you from DevEx: scamming, phishing, false advertising, attempting to exchange Robux for real currency other than through DevEx, and any illegal or unethical activities.

Roblox Premium subscriptions come in three tiers, with each carrying its own price and benefits:

  1. Premium 450 costs $4.99 per month, and nets you 450 Robux per month

  2. Premium 1000 costs $9.99 per month, and nets you 1,000 Robux per month

  3. Premium 2200 costs $19.99 per month, and nets you 2,200 Robux each month

In addition to gifting Robux on a monthly basis, a Roblox Premium subscription gives you exclusive discounts and items, 10 percent more Robux when you purchase the currency with real money, and the ability to trade items. Trading items is an important aspect of generating Robux, as you’ll soon see.

You can verify your email address in the Settings menu on the Roblox website. It’s a good idea to verify your email even if you aren’t planning on cashing out your Robux. It secures your account, and gives you a way to reset your password should you get locked out.

Roblox Game Access

2. Charge for Game Access

Most Roblox games are free to play, and don’t require any payment. If you want to make money, however, you can charge people a fee to play your game (between 25 and 1,000 Robux). Note that people aren’t buying your user-created game; they’re paying for access to your user-created game. Anyone attempting to sell a game is likely a scammer (more on that later).

If you decide to charge access to your game, you should also create promotional videos and images to give potential players a sense of what your game’s about. After all, if potential players can’t see your game in action, they’re unlikely to buy it.

Roblox Game Pass

3. Create Game Passes

Game passes typically open the door to features not normally obtainable in the game, such as a special suit that lets a character fly. More common are passes that double players’ experience points, double players’ earned gold, or let players carry additional items or pets; it really depends on the type of game you’ve created.

You can’t go overboard, though; you must craft your game passes with care. If your game passes give players too much power in competitive action, or an unfair advantage over people who can’t or won’t purchase them, then your game will be considered “pay to win.” You don’t want your game to have such poor gameplay balance.

Roblox Perishables

4. Make Perishables

Perishables are single-use items intended to be repeatedly purchased. These items are always a big hit, whether they’re additional gold, rocket fuel, extra ammo, or XP. Remember, the Roblox demographic is mostly made up of young children and teenagers. So, if you charge Robux for a perishable item, make sure that it’s also available without purchase in some fashion. That way, players can still compete in competitive showdowns, even if they must grind to obtain the item.

5. Fashion Clothing

Depending on the title, Roblox games offer many ways to customize your in-game character with cool clothing. Maintaining your brand and preventing copycats is a topic for another day. Still, know that you can download clothing templates, create your own designs, and place the gear for sale (typically 5 to 100 Robux).

The drive to outpace the competition by creating more and more unique clothing is probably the hardest part of the Roblox fashion angle. I recommend using an image-editing program, such as GIMP or Photoshop, to create the digital threads.

Roblox Trades

6. Trade Hard-to-Find Items

The Roblox platform lets you trade Limited or Limited Unique items. The difference between the two? A Limited item was once sold by Roblox, but is no longer sold; it was for sale during a specific time period. A Limited Unique item, on the other hand, was once sold by Roblox, but limited by quantity. So, for example, if you picked up a rare hat that eventually drew high demand, you can trade it to another Roblox user for huge amounts of Robux.

A Bonus Tip: Avoid Scammers

You can’t talk about the Roblox marketplace without discussing scammers, shady people who offer free Robux, cheats, or money with the intent of stealing your account. Sometimes, they’ll ask you to buy their games. Don’t trust these people. They may try to steal your items, creations, or Robux. There’s no such thing as free Robux! In fact, Robux scams have become such a big deal that Roblox made it against its policy to give Robux away in any form other than a Roblox gift card(Opens in a new window).

Never give your account or password to anyone. If someone claims to be from Roblox and asks for your password, that person’s a scammer. Roblox will never ask you for your password. In addition, some scammers will send you a link that cookie scrapes(Opens in a new window) your account, and gives the attacker the ability to log into your account without a password. So, don’t click links sent your way. Lastly, there are Roblox users who attempt direct trades with you (there’s no centralized marketplace to exchange goods), but they have no intention of handing over your desired item. Be smart. Be careful.

Now use your imagination to create awesome games and related content that will make other Roblox users open their wallets.
