Russia Blocks Access to SoundCloud

The Russian government has brought down its ban hammer and sickle once again, this time on music sharing service SoundCloud.

As Reuters reports(Opens in a new window), the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office requested the ban in response to information shared on the service regarding Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The Interfax news agency detailed a release from communications watchdog Roskomnadzor (RKN), which said, “Roskomnadzor restricted access to the SoundCloud service in connection with placement of materials containing false information regarding the nature of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.”

More specifically, the information shared on SoundCloud related to “attacks on civilians, strikes on civilian infrastructure, about numerous civilian casualties at the hands of Russian soldiers.”

The Russian government has been very keen to restrict access to all services where information about its war with Ukraine can’t be controlled. Fines are also being issued when it deems a service to have shared “fake” information. Notable website bans since the war with Ukraine started include Google News, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, BBC News, and Amnesty International.
