Most of us will recall the iconic scene in Love Actually when Alan Rickman’s character attempts to sneakily buy a gift for his mistress while his wife shops nearby, all while the blissfully unaware sales assistant takes their sweet time wrapping it up.

According to one former retail worker, however, sales assistants don’t necessarily need an ill-timed interruption from a spouse to twig that there are secrets lurking within a marriage. Former Chanel employee Shannon Hill claims she and her colleagues always knew when a male shopper was being unfaithful at Christmastime, with one particular gift being a dead giveaway.

Taking to TikTok, where she goes by the username @shannonhillnews, Shannon revealed: “I have got a little story, a little tea for you guys if you will, about what husbands buy for not only their wife but their mistresses too.”

She went on to explain to her fascinated followers that men would often come to her counter to purchase skincare, lipstick, and a fragrance for their wives at Christmas, and whatever they bought would be kept on file.

A few of these men would slip in an extra gift, chosen to cover their tracks.

The former Chanel employee says they’d always buy two bottles of the same perfume

Shannon explained: “They would buy their wife her favourite fragrance, they would get it all wrapped really nicely, and then they would buy the same fragrance for their mistress. Because guess what, they did not want to leave their mistress’ house smelling like a different woman.”

She added: “It was always, always the same fragrance. It was Coco Mademoiselle perfume. It was never Number Five because people come in and buy that for their mum. It was never the Chance perfumes. It was always Coco Mademoiselle. Us counter girls, we always have the tea.”

Although Shannon was tempted at times to tell their wives exactly what was going on, she never did, keeping the secrets of the counter to herself.

One fellow customer service veteran shared: “Girl….I had a guy buy a purse and wallet for his mistress (worked for Coach) and his WIFE found the receipt…thinking it was for her!

“He came back to buy the EXACT same purse and wallet combo because his wife thought she was getting that for Christmas…the look on his face when it was SOLD OUT.”

Another commented: “Us bartenders too. Sunday brunch with the wife and kids, lunch breaks, and cocktail hour with the mistress.”
