Samsung will show off its next-generation folding phones at a Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July 26, the company announced today(Opens in a new window). The event will take place near Samsung’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea—marking the first time an Unpacked has been held in Samsung’s home country. The company is widely expected to show off the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5, among other potential products.
Samsung is making some big promises. “A new cultural driver is coming,” it says, that is “designed to open possibilities and transform lives. It’s going to make you want to Join the flip side.”
The turn of phrase, which accompanies a rotating silhouette of what looks like its flip phone, may refer to the larger outer display that the Z Flip 5 may feature.
Motorola recently reinvented the modern flip phone with its Moto Razr+, which has a slick external screen that lets you interact with many of the phone’s apps and features without opening the fold. The Z Flip 4 has a smaller external display and Samsung will need to match the Razr+’s appealing design if it is to hold onto its market share in the flip phone space.
There were no hints or mentions concerning the Z Fold 5, the company’s larger, productivity-focused smartphone. While some had been hoping the fifth-generation foldable would take a different shape from the previous builds, the latest rumors suggest it will be a merely warmed-over upgrade to the Z Fold 4. It will surely be a better foldable than the Google Pixel Fold.
Other potential items on deck could include refreshed versions of its high-end Galaxy Tab S tablets, as well as a new family of smartwatches to follow last year’s Galaxy Watch 5.
Samsung didn’t say much else about its July 26 Unpacked, only noting that the event will be live-streamed via its website(Opens in a new window) and YouTube channel(Opens in a new window). It will begin at 4:00 a.m. Pacific / 7:00 a.m. Eastern.
PCMag plans to cover the event fully, so be sure to check back for regular updates and details about the new devices as they are announced.
