Scott Coker’s New MMA Venture is Straight Up Fire, Backed by Tony Hawk!

Date:

Hold onto your hats, fight fans! A true pioneer in combat sports, Scott Coker, the mastermind behind Bellator and Strikeforce, is gearing up to launch a brand new global MMA league, and for real, it’s looking like a game-changer. With a whopping $60 million in financing already secured, this new ‘MMA venture’ is set to throw down the gauntlet to giants like the UFC and Bellator MMA when it debuts in early 2027. This isn’t just another contender; it’s a strategic move backed by some serious heavy hitters across finance, tech, and sports.

The investor lineup for this still-unnamed league is nothing short of impressive, showcasing a diverse coalition ready to shake up the mixed martial arts landscape. Funding is led by Creator Sports Capital, with additional significant participation from Griffin Gaming Partners. But wait, there’s more! Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk is on board, along with Upper Deck, Steve Kaplan (owner of D.C. United and co-founder of Oaktree Capital), Swimmy Minami (founder of Visional and a New York Yankees limited partner), and former Fortress Investment Group vice-chairman Dean Dakolias. Plus, there are several other bigwigs with ownership stakes in both the NFL and NBA, making this an all-star financial backing.

Coker himself will be at the helm as co-founder and CEO, bringing nearly four decades of combat sports expertise to the table. Joining him as co-founder and chairman of the board is Peter Levin of Griffin Gaming Partners, a name synonymous with strategic vision in the entertainment and gaming sectors. The advisory group is equally stacked, featuring industry titans like Wade Davis, former CEO of TelevisaUnivision, Steve Mosko, ex-chairman of Sony Pictures Television, and Kevin Kay, who previously led powerhouses like Paramount Network and Spike TV. Their collective experience is straight up on point.

The timing of this launch couldn’t be better. MMA has exploded into a global phenomenon, boasting a $20 billion-plus market and over 625 million fans worldwide, with the coveted male 18–34 demographic leading the charge. Despite this massive growth, a significant gap remains: professional athletes from over 40 countries often lack a clear pathway for career advancement and access to elite competition. This new league aims to close that gap, setting a new standard for the sport by placing athletes firmly at the center of the global MMA ecosystem, promising a ‘fighter-first’ philosophy that hits different.

Coker’s track record speaks volumes about his ability to spot and nurture talent, having launched the careers of iconic figures like Daniel Cormier, Ronda Rousey, and Gina Carano. Peter Levin’s past also adds major street cred; he was an advisor and investor in Strikeforce before its 2011 sale to UFC. Beyond that, Levin represented legendary MMA competitors such as Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, and has invested in diverse sports ventures from the World Golf Tour to the Welsh soccer club Swansea City A.F.C. These dudes are legit.

As Coker himself stated, there’s ‘incredible demand for a fresh, new global brand in MMA.’ This venture is all about bringing back what truly matters: the integrity of competition, profound respect for the athletes, and sharing their incredible journeys with a global audience. Benjamin Grubbs of Creator Sports Capital echoed this sentiment, highlighting Coker’s unique ability to build winning franchises by prioritizing athletes. It’s giving a whole new meaning to authentic sports entertainment.

The coming weeks promise more exciting details, including the league’s official name, its innovative structure, unique format, specific regions for athlete participation, and, of course, the highly anticipated event schedules. This new league is lowkey poised to revolutionize professional MMA, and fans worldwide are eager to see how it all unfolds.
