A Gunman's Rampage Leaves a Hospital Staff Member Dead and Another Wounded

A horrifying incident unfolded at the Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Northwest Portland, Oregon, on Saturday morning, as a gunman opened fire, tragically killing a security guard and injuring a hospital staff member. The suspect’s rampage prompted a city-wide manhunt, leading to a fatal encounter with law enforcement during a traffic stop.

Authorities received reports of the shooting around 11 a.m. Pacific time, and upon arriving at the scene, they discovered that Bobby Smallwood, a dedicated security guard, had sustained gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a trauma center, Smallwood tragically succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Another hospital staff member was wounded but is now in stable condition, according to the hospital’s official statement.

During the extensive search for the suspect, the hospital was placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and staff. Responding officers combed the neighborhood for the assailant, even evacuating a nearby Fred Meyer grocery store. However, the suspect was not found inside the store.

The suspect’s presence was later identified by multiple law enforcement agencies while he was driving a vehicle in the nearby city of Gresham, located just east of Portland. Officers conducted a traffic stop, during which they opened fire on the suspect, resulting in his death at the scene. The suspect’s identity remains unknown at this time, and police have not confirmed whether he was armed or if he fired on law enforcement during the encounter.
