Serena Williams is set to retire from tennis after the 2022 US Open.
Well, the 40-year-old tennis legend isn’t officially calling it a retirement; she is referring to it as more of an “evolution” into the next stage of her life.
Eeither way, Williams’ time playing the sport competitively will soon be over.
It should be relatively easy for Williams to “evolve.” She has invested in numerous businesses during her career that will keep her busy in the next phase of her life. She also will have plenty of money at her disposal.
Williams will retire as the WTA’s all-time career earnings leader by a wide margin. She also has racked up nine figures’ worth of endorsement deals and should continue to rake in cash from those during her retirement.

Williams will head into retirement as the WTA’s all-time career earnings leader, and it won’t be close. Her winnings on tour are $94,606,355, per the WTA. That is more than double the second-place earner, her sister, Venus Williams.

3 | Simona Halep | $40,107,097 |
4 | Maria Sharapova | $38,777,962 |

In addition to Serena Williams’ earnings, she has racked up numerous endorsement deals off the court. Sportico reports that Williams has made more than $350 million in endorsement deals during her career, which raises her career earnings to roughly $450 million.
Serena Williams’ businesses
Williams has used her career earnings to successfully invest in multiple businesses. She has a large, diverse portfolio that stems largely from a company she founded.
Serena Ventures
Williams founded a venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, in 2014. She has invested in more than 60 startups, per Front Office Sports.
Williams explained her work at the firm in an interview with Vogue. She highlighted the success her business has had in backing startups and its commitment to diversity.
“I wrote one of the very first checks for MasterClass,” Williams wrote. “It’s one of 16 unicorns — companies valued at more than $1 billion — that Serena Ventures has funded, along with Tonal, Impossible Foods, Noom, and Esusu, to name a few.
“This year we raised $111 million of outside financing, from banks, private individuals and family offices. Seventy-eight percent of our portfolio happens to be companies started by women and people of color, because that’s who we are.”
The company should give Williams plenty to focus on as she transitions from life on the court to life off it.
Miami Dolphins ownership
A large chunk of Williams’ business involvement stems from Serena Ventures, but she also has her hand in multiple sports enterprises. Notably, she and her sister, Venus, are minority owners of the NFL’s Dolphins.
The Williams sisters became stakeholders in August 2009. It’s unclear exactly how much of the team they own, but it is only a sliver; Stephen Ross is presumed to own 95 percent of the franchise, per Bloomberg.com.
The sisters’ investment in the Dolphins made them the first Black women to own any percentage of an NFL franchise.
NWSL Angel City FC ownership
Williams became an investor in the NWSL, America’s women’s professional soccer league, in July 2020 when she joined a group composed almost entirely of women that was awarded an expansion franchise. The team, Angel City FC, plays in Los Angeles.
Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria, Mia Hamm and Becky G are among the other notable members of the group; so too is Williams’ daughter, Olympia, who is the NWSL’s youngest owner and was just 2 years old at the time that her mother invested in the team.
Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, was also involved in the NWSL bid. The Reddit co-founder has an estimated net worth of $70 million, per Forbes.
