Serie A league table 2022/23: Updated standings, classifica as Milan, Inter, Napoli, Juventus and Roma battle for Italy’s scudetto

Defending Serie A champions AC Milan have not let up in the new season with an undefeated start and four wins from their first six matches.

The Rossoneri are tied with a revamped Napoli side atop the table on 14 points after both triumphed in their Matchweek 6 contests. Each won by a narrow one-goal margin: Napoli got an 89th minute winner against Spezia, while AC Milan needed a penalty-kick goal by Olivier Giroud to pull out a 2-1 win at Sampdoria.

It sets up a juicy matchup on Sept. 18 when Napoli visit AC Milan’s San Siro stadium, where they won 1-0 last season. It will be the first trip to the renowned venue for new Napoli hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while Milan’s influential winger Rafael Leao will miss the match after picking up a red card against Sampdoria.

Atalanta could go top of Serie A with a Sunday home win against promoted side Cremonese. Udinese, Lazio, Roma, and Juventus could all stay close to the top spots by winning their matches between Sunday and Monday.

Monza are still rooted to the bottom of the table after having lost their first five matches. Sunday they get their best chance at picking their first Serie A point when they travel to play fellow promoted side Lecce.

The Sporting News brings you a full update of the current standings in the Italian top flight in the 2022/23 season, from the title race to the relegation battle.

Serie A title race for Scudetto

Defending champions AC Milan and a rejuvenated Napoli are two of the most in-form teams among the preseason favorites. They’re on equal points after six matches and they happen to face off at the San Siro before the September international break.

But it’s surprise side Atalanta which could find itself alone on top of the table if it can take care of business against promoted side Cremonese on Sunday.

Inter Milan (two losses in six) are scuffling along through the start of their campaign, while Jose Mourinho’s Roma are also managing to stay close. Perennial favorite Juventus (8th) have ground to make up and that starts with a home match against relegation candidate Salernitana on Sunday.

Serie A European places

As one of the top-ranked nations in Europe, Italy’s Serie A has four automatic berths for the UEFA Champions League which go to the top four teams. There are also two tickets to the Europa League (5th place and the Coppa Italia winner) and one to the Conference League (sixth place).

Italy’s current participants in the UEFA Champions League — Milan, Inter, Napoli, and Juventus — are the favorites to reclaim their spot in the prestigious competition next season and finish top four. But it should be a tighter race given the quality of the other challengers.

Atalanta, Roma, and Lazio likely feel they have what it takes to get into the Top 4 Champions League zone, while Udinese could prove to be the surprise entrant if they can sustain their early form.

The consolation prize for fifth place and sixth place are the berths in the Europa League and Conference League, respectively. And if the winner of the Coppa Italia is a top-four team, then the Europa League berth that comes with that trophy will instead go to sixth place, with the Conference League spot handed down to seventh place.

Serie A relegation

The bottom three spots in the table are the trap doors that send those finishers down to the second-tier Serie B.

The three promoted sides from Serie B already find themselves in the mix to avoid the immediate drop back down. Lecce, Cremonese, and Monza occupy three of the bottom four places in the table after five matches.

Sampdoria look to be in for another difficult season after finishing six points above the drop zone last season. Spezia also managed to survive by an identical point total and will play a third straight campaign in the Italian top flight.

The team that’s currently out of the relegation picture is Salernitana, who avoided relegation by a single point after an incredible run to end the season. Bologna fired their manager Sinisa Mihajlovic for fear of becoming a relegation candidate (ex-Spezia coach Thiago Motta replaces him), while Empoli have to be careful not to relax after a 14th-place finish in 2021/22.
