- What would you think if you fell asleep today and woke up in 2055?
This is the story of a girl who slept for 32 years.
Ever woke up from a nap and felt like you didn’t know what the day or time was? This story is kind of like that but, well, a little different.
Karolina became known as a real life ‘sleeping beauty’ after stories emerged that she fell asleep when she was 14 years old, she went to sleep and slept for 32 years. When she woke up, she was 46 years old/
There are days we all wished we slept for 32 years or at least wish it’d felt like that. But for Karolina, it wasn’t just a long and tiring week that induced the snooze fest.
When Karolina was born, she became the only girl in a family with 5 other siblings and for the first 14 years of her life, everything was normal. One day, she came home with a swollen face and horribly painful toothache.
She said she’d fallen on some ice crossing a frozen river and because the pain became too much for Katrina to bear, her parents sent her to bed in 1876, not knowing she wouldn’t wake up until 1908.
Family and friends raised money in the beginning to have a doctor come and check on Karolina. Unable to wake her, they simply began to get her regular checkups.
Karolina’s condition remain unchanged, even with taking her to the hospital and putting an electric current through her body to try and wake her up.
Medics across the board remained baffled by her condition and said that it defied any and all conventional understanding of sleep disorders.
Her mother cared for her throughout the years, allegedly feeding her milk while she slept for 32 years. When her mom passed away in 1905 a housekeeper was brought into the house to look after Karolina.
Three years later, the housekeeper was surprised to hear strange sounds coming from Karolina’s room. After rushing upstairs, they found the now 46-year-old Karolina crying.
She didn’t remember anything about having slept 32 years and no longer recognized her brothers.
Doctors began to vigorously test Karolina and were shocked to find that beyond her weight loss and much younger mentality, she was mostly unaffected after having slept 32 years.
Karolina was able to get her strength and speech back within weeks, causing many to wonder if she had really been sleeping or if the whole situation was a coverup to prevent Karolina from having any interaction with the outside world.
Harald Fröderström, Swedish psychiatrist, said that Karolina may have been through some kind of psychosis brought on by a traumatic event. To this day, her story remains one of mystery and questions.
After having slept 32 years and waking up, Karolina lived for another 42 years before dying in 1950. If this happened to you, would you even want to wake up in 32 years at this point?
Hint: It would be 2055 by then, and I don’t know about y’all, but these 2020s have only shown us the way things are going. You know?
