Talk about Smash Mouth football.
John Madden’s famed line inspired the name of one of music’s most … well-known bands, but it doesn’t look like an intricate knowledge of football came along with it.
The Bay Area-based alternative rock band have long interjected themselves into sports matters on Twitter, and recently, they dove back into the sports sphere: Smash Mouth’s Twitter offered something of a solution to the 49ers’ dual-quarterback situation with Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo both on the roster come Week 1, pitching the idea of a “Q-Back:”
+ Jimmy behind center and Trey lined-up in the backfield as “Q-Back”. Pitch to Trey, reverse to Deebo, keep it run it, or throw it. BAM!!!! 49ers2.0

2022 NFL PROJECTIONS: Where will the 49ers finish?
Kyle Shanahan’s offense should have a few different wrinkles to it considering Lance’s unique skillset, as opposed to the pocket passing and play-action based game that the scheme is known for, and was run by Garoppolo in recent years.
It’s not the first time that Smash Mouth has gotten involved in sports talk on the interwebs: They’ve attacked the Oakland A’s in the past, and endorsed Tony La Russa’s hiring in Chicago prior to the 2021 season.
The 49ers recently restructured Garoppolo’s deal after an offseason of trade rumors. The keys to San Francisco’s future are now solely in Lance’s hands, but it seems like the double-reverse RPO might be a bit pie-in-the-sky. It’s the thought that counts, though.
Some sports opinions are totally fine. But as it turns out, not all that glitters is gold.
