Starting in February, full-time Snap Inc. employees are expected to spend at least 80% of working hours in the social network’s offices.
That’s an average of four days per week—with some flexibility for work-related tasks like off-campus client meetings.
“I believe that spending more time together in person will help us to achieve our full potential,” CEO Evan Spiegel wrote in a staff memo reviewed by Bloomberg(Opens in a new window). “What each of us may sacrifice in terms of our individual convenience, I believe we will reap in terms of our collective success.”
The maker of multimedia messaging app Snapchat is the latest major tech company to implement a post-pandemic return to office policy. Apple employees have been working at the office three days a week since September, and Elon Musk told Twitter employees remote work was no longer allowed earlier this month.
Snap’s new “default together” policy applies to personnel in all 30 global offices; the company is, however, developing an exceptions process for those requesting to work remotely.

“We’ve been working this way for so long that I’m afraid we’ve forgotten what we’ve lost—and what we could gain—by spending more time together,” Spiegel said. “I believe that ‘default together,’ while retaining flexibility for our team members, will help us to accelerate our growth and deliver on our strategic priorities of growing our community, reaccelerating our revenue growth, and leading in AR.”
It’s not an easy time to work in technology: Like many other large companies, Snap has spent much of the second half of this year shrinking its focus and staff; in August, it cut 20%(Opens in a new window) of its 6,400-person workforce as a result of reduced revenue growth.
