Wednesday night MACtion offered a frigid sight to those who tuned in to the Central Michigan-Western Michigan game: heavy snow that blanketed the field at CMU’s Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
It’s that time of year, where precious few teams can enjoy snowy weather with their football. And the first half of this game was a winter wonderland, with the visiting Broncos nearly invisible from the waist up.

Fortunately — or unfortunately — the grounds crew enlisted some motorized plows to remove the snow from the field, leaving only frozen turf:

The conditions naturally weren’t conducive to scoring. Western Michigan secured a 12-10 victory with a safety and a field goal in the game’s final four minutes. The host Chippewas had led 10-7 since the early part of the third quarter.
WMU looked like it forced a CMU QB fumble and returned it for a TD, but on review they ruled the QB was tackled in the endzone for a safety! CMU still leads, 10-9 with 3:57 left #MACtion on ESPNU pic.twitter.com/uM8YgcqeQP

Western Michigan got on the board first with a Sean Tyler 53-yard run to paydirt:

Bert Emanuel later tied the game with a 60-yard run for the game’s final touchdown:

Those were among the few explosive plays in the game as the conditions kept both teams virtually landlocked. Neither team attempted 20 passes nor completed more than nine. Other curiosities included two missed field goal kicks by Western Michigan inside 25 yards.
Either way, fans who braved the frigid temperatures and neutral observers alike loved the spectacle. In that sense, everyone who watched the game was a winner.
Here’s a sampling of the best images and social media reactions from the snow game:
