Sony is preparing to launch a new PS5 controller with a focus on customization. It’s called the DualSense Edge(Opens in a new window), and will no doubt draw comparisons with Microsoft’s Xbox Elite controllers.
The DualSense Edge wireless controller will offer customization options both to the hardware directly and through software. On the hardware side, you’ll be able to swap out the stick caps for a choice between standard, high dome, and low dome caps. The back buttons are also swappable, with half-dome and lever options, and the stick modules can be replaced if you find they are wearing out from heavy use. Sony will sell new stick modules separately rather than including spares in the box.
On the software side, buttons can be remapped or deactivated, stick sensitivity can be adjusted, and trigger travel can also be tweaked. Sony wants gamers to be able to adjust between travel distance and dead zones for different types of game, and the DualSense Edge will also allow you to save multiple profiles so you can swap between them when switching games.
Setup adjustments can be made on the controller using a dedicated Fn button, which allows for profile switching, game/chat volume adjustment, and brings up the controller profile settings for further tweaking.
The DualSense Edge is viewed as an enhancement of the standard DualSense controller, so it isn’t losing any of the standard features. It will still include haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion controls, and a built-in microphone. The USB-C cable it comes with is braided and uses a connector housing “to lock into the controller” so it can’t easily detach. Sony also decided to include a storage case which supports recharging while the controller is inside.

We don’t have a price or release date for the DualSense Edge controller yet, but Sony said it will reveal more “in the months ahead.” With the PlayStation VR2 launching in early 2023, I’d be surprised if Sony didn’t have this new controller on store shelves before the holiday season kicks off.
