Sony’s $200 DualSense Edge Controller Contains a Surprisingly Small Battery

Anyone deciding to pay $200 for a DualSense Edge controller is right to expect a premium bit of kit for their PS5, but what they probably won’t expect is a battery much smaller than the one used in the $70 DualSense controller.

As VGC reports(Opens in a new window), a teardown of Sony’s new controller by Twitch channel Budds_Controllers(Opens in a new window) confirmed the use of a smaller battery compared to the original DualSense. It’s not a small difference, either.

The DualSense controller uses a 1,560mAh battery, while the DualSense Edge makes do with a 1,050mAh battery. Rather than an exercise in cost saving, it looks as though Sony had so many parts to cram inside the controller casing it simply couldn’t fit a larger battery alongside them.

As The Verge(Opens in a new window) reported last year, Sony did tell us the operating time of the Edge controller would be “moderately shorter” than the DualSense, stating this was because “we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design.” We now know that means many more parts.

The included USB braided cable will ensure you can keep on playing even if the battery runs dry, but it’s a shame that such an expensive controller doesn’t surpass the battery life of the standard controller.
