Sony embraced artificial intelligence to enhance its latest R series camera, and combined it with the company’s highest-resolution image sensor available in an Alpha camera.
The Alpha 7R V(Opens in a new window) captures 61MP still images and takes advantage of “the most effective 8-step image stabilization system ever offered” in a Sony Alpha camera. Add to that the ability to record 8K 24/25p video, and a new 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor, which Sony says “combines the utility of a conventional tilting monitor with side-opening vari-angle flexibility, and an electronic viewfinder.”
The AI processing unit allows the Alpha 7R V to go beyond face and eye detection for accurate capture. Sony included “detailed information about human form and pose estimation” to allow for real-time recognition autofocus using AI subject recognition. This camera knows if it’s capturing a human, animal, vehicle, or insect and adjusts accordingly.
The latest Bionz XR image processing engine is combined with a 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor to allow sensitivity settings from ISO 100 to ISO 32000 for stills and movies. That 8-step image stabilization takes advantage of gyro sensors combined with a stabilization algorithm for single-pixel level control. Pixel-level movements, e.g. leaves moving on a tree, are automatically detected and corrected by the camera.
Still photographers will be happy to hear Sony added lossless RAW image compression, expanded focus and exposure bracketing, a wide brightness range for large screen viewing, and high-quality HEIF images with high compression efficiency.

For video capture, as well as 8K, Sony allows 4K capture oversampled from 6.2K without binning, 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, and a high-efficiency MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec.
Sony will ship the Alpha 7R V in December for $3,900(Opens in a new window) ($5,300 CAD(Opens in a new window)) at authorized dealers across North America.
