Spain vs Germany live: World Cup score, highlights as Fullkrug cancels out Morata opener

Niclas Fullkrug gave Germany a World Cup lifeline with an 83rd-minute equaliser against Spain at Al Bayt Stadium.

Four-time World Cup winners Germany were looking to bounce back from their shock 2-1 defeat to Japan, while Luis Enrique’s side were riding high on their 7-0 demolition of Costa Rica.

A surprising 1-0 win for Costa Rica over Japan earlier on Sunday slightly lessened the stakes of this game, although the intensity was still suffocating at times before substitute Alvaro Morata produced as superb finish from Jordi Alba’s 62nd-minute cross.

But Werder Bremen striker Fullkrug had a similar impact from the bench when he lashed into the top corner following fine work from Jamal Musiala.

Spain vs Germany live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

83rd minuteGOOOAAAALLLL!!!!!! Fullkrug!!!!!

It’s one apiece for the replacement strikers. Musiala is involved, of course he is, and Fullkrug runs off the recently introduced Balde to smash into the top corner.

80th minute: Kimmich into the wall and behind. Spain deal with the corner with the minimum of fuss.

79th minute: Magnificent last-ditch challenge from Rodri on Sane but now Germany have a dangerous freekick just outside the box. They’re knocking on the door and quite loudly.

73rd minuteBrilliant save from Simon! The Spain goalkeeper has been a madcap presence this evening but he strands tall when it matters, thwarting Musiala at close quarters.

71st minute: The brilliant Musiala dances down the Spain left. His cross is towards Fullkrug and Rodri makes an excellent challenge, with the bonus that the ball pings off his opponent’s shins and it’s a goal kick.

69th minute: Now Flick acts. Klostermann, Sane and Fullkrug on for Kehrer, Sane and Muller with Germany’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

66th minute: That’s Asensio’s last act as pacy winger Nico Williams comes on. Koke, with his more robust stylings, replaces Gavi’s midfield. Both those changes from Luis Enrique feel made to measure for the game situation. Flick yet to go to his bench.

65th minutes: Chances at both ends. Goretzka has a shot blocked as Germany frantically look for a response. But they leave space for Olmo to gallop down the left. His ball across the box reaches Asensio but the Real Madrid man thrashes over.

62nd minuteGOOOOAAALLLLL!!!!! Morata!!!!!

Luis Enrique’s change pays dividends. Almost inevitably, the brilliant Alba is involved. It’s a lovely ball in from the left but Morata still has plenty to do. He gets around Sule’s considerable frame and deftly finishes first time with the outside of his foot.

61st minute: Musiala burst forward and wins a freekick. In a low-key way, the teenager has been excellent again. Kimmich floats the ball in, the Spain offside trap baffles Germany again and it’s another wasted opportunity.

57th minute: Not for the first time, Simon plays a ludicrously dangerous pass to the edge of his box. Germany are all over it, Gundogan tees up Kimmich and the Spain goalkeeper at least atones by saving at full stretch. The resulting corner is cleared.

54th minute: Luis Enrique blinks first and sends on Morata for Torres, who can’t follow up his hat-trick from the Nations League encounter. Now one team has an orthodox centre-forward.

51st minute: It wasn’t Rudiger offside this time, just about six Germany players all at once as Spain hold an aggressive line and Raum’s delivery skims away for a goal kick.

50th minute: Foul by Busquets on Gundogan. He needs to be careful. Germany have an inviting-looking freekick on the left. Stay onside, lads!

46th minute: We’re back. No changes for either side but, if it stays like this, surely Flick and Luis Enrique will be dipping into their talent-stacked benches soon enough.

Halftime: No way through for either side but that’s been an absorbing watch and it remains wonderfully poised

44th minute: Rodri tugs and Musiala and the youngster doesn’t go down. Busquets shows his apparent heir how it’s done and ploughs through the back of the Germany forward. That’s a deserved yellow for the Barcelona veteran.

42nd minute: It’s really hotting up now. Alba and Torres combine again and Spain win their latest corner.

39th minute: VAR, NO GOAL! Rudiger powers home a classic centre-half goal from a freekick from the right but the Real Madrid man went too early, needlessly so, and VAR confirms he was half a yard offside.

37th minute: It felt like Kehrer was on a mission to get booked over the past few minutes and the referee has granted his wish for a foul on Torres.

36th minute: A Spain corner is not effectively cleared and breaks to Torres at the far post. Musiala gets across to make a brilliant block.

34th minute: Ooh! Bit of afters there as Laporte goes to take a Spain throw, Kehrer shoves him and the centre-back kicks out a little bit in retaliation. Careful, lads.

33rd minute:The offside flag goes up and Torres will be mightily relieved because that’s a howling miss. Alba was just beyond last man Rudiger as he darted down the left. Ferran found room but blazed over on his left foot from about eight yards.

30th minute: Scrappiness on the ball has spread beyond the goalkeepers and, after Spain’s bright start, Germany will be quietly happy with this. They’re regularly winning back possession in dangerous areas and effectively clogging up Luis Enrique’s passing machine.

27th minute: Now Neuer duffs the ball straight to the opposition. This is a pretty madcap take on the goalkeepers’ union. Olmo finds Torres, who can’t quite get his pass under his spell and that allows Raum to get back and make an important block.

25th minute: There’s being calm under pressure but, Unai Simon, blimey! Germany win the ball high up, Gundogan scampers into the box but an interception is played back to the Spain goalkeeper. Simon looks to stroke a ball through traffic and only succeeds in picking on Gnabry, who shoots beyond the far post.

22nd minute: Space for Jordi Alba down the left, who cuts inside and thrashes his weaker left foot through it. There’s some excitement as the shot ripples the side netting but Neuer saw that all the way and let it go.

17th minute: Things have settled down after that early flurry of action. The hulking Goretzka fouling Gavi on the half-turn a few moments ago felt like neat encapsulation of the terms on which this one might end up being fought.

10th minute: Now Simon is called into action at the other end. Goretzka brings a more athletic edge to this Germany midfield and he charges forward, carrying the ball with imposing grace. He slips a pass to Gnabry, whose is closed down well by Simon. The offside flag went up, but he wasn’t to know that.

8th minute: Looking at the replay, Neuer wasn’t beaten – he saw the shot late but just got his right glove to the ball to push it onto the bar. That’s a magnificent save.

7th minuteOlmo rattles the crossbar! Spain are hogging possession. Pedri and Gavi quicken the pace. They find Asensio who recycles the ball to the left winger. Olmo absolute clatters it, Neuer is beaten but the ball bounces to safety.

2nd minute: We’re underway. As expected, Gundogan is the most advanced of the Germany midfielders in support of Muller.

5 mins from kickoff: Here are the teams. Anthems time. This is big.

10 mins from kickoff: It helps to have a little knowhow on nights like this. Thankfully for Germany, Manuel Neuer has that in spades.

30 mins from kickoff: That Torres-inspired Nations League shellacking is something Spain will seek to use to their advantage tonight and there is also the memory of the previous World Cup meeting between the sides to hold close. In 2010, La Roja secured a 1-0 semifinal win thanks to a Carles Puyol goal en route to glory.

1 hr 5 mins from kickoff: Spain’s only change is Dani Carvajal coming in for Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back. That means Rodri remains at centreback alongside Aymeric Laporte. The front three of Ferran Torres, Marco Asensio and Dani Olmo were all on the scoresheet last time out.

1 hr 10 mins from kickoff: Here’s the Germany XI. Thilo Kerher comes in at right-back, meaning Niklas Sule should enjoy a far more comfortable outing at centre-back alongside Antonio Rudiger. Leon Goretzka will bolster the midfield alongside Bayern Munich teammate Joshua Kimmich, meaning Ilkay Gundogan can push further forward to support a front three of Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller. That means Manchester City’s Gundogan is the only non-Bayern player in the front six.

1 hr 50 mins from kickoff: Although it would no longer be terminal to their World Cup status, defeat tonight would leave Germany staring at group-stage elimination for the second tournament in succession. To put that in context, the only time they previously failed to clear the first round was in 1938! Back then, the competition was still a straight knockout and they lost to Switzerland in a replay.

Prior to Russia 2018, Germany’s 21st century record was finalists (2002), semifinalists (2006), semifinalists (2010), winners (2014). Bombing out in the group stage for the second time in a row would mark a drop off of historic proportions.

2 hrs 20 mins from kickoff: If Germany fans are looking for some sort of Bundesliga-based good omen, Hoffenheim stalwart Andrej Kramaric has equalised for Croatia.

2 hrs 35 mins from kickoff: ANOTHER POTENTIAL SHOCK KLAXON!!! Canada are beating Croatia. Want to know more? We’ve got you covered.

3 hrs from kickoff: Ferran Torres scored twice in Spain’s opening rout and he famously went one better against Germany when the sides met in the Nations League in 2020, plundering a hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition.

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Gavi scored the pick of Spain’s seven goals against Costa Rica to cap a sparkling all-round performance. Will we see more of the same tonight from the Barcelona teenager or, as some reports in Spain have suggested, will Luis Enrique taking him out of the firing line as he shuffles his pack? The Spain boss rarely rests on an unchanged line-up, although keeping one that won 7-0 must be sorely tempting.

4 hrs from kickoff: The upsets keep coming for the European heavyweights in this competition. Belgium have just been deservedly beaten 2-0 by Morocco. Find out how that one unfolded here.

4 hrs 25 mins from kickoff: There was a bit of a sensation earlier on in Group E as Costa Rica bounced back from their 7-0 spanking by Spain to upset Germany’s upsetters Japan 1-0. You’d have got long odds on all of Iran, Australia and Costa Rica winning their second matches after shipping such heavy defeats in their openers.

The upshot is Germany would not be eliminated, even if they lose tonight. However, in that scenario, they would have to rely on an already-qualified Spain doing them a favour by beating Japan. Alternatively, if Hansi Flick’s men can turn things around and win, all four teams in Group E would head into the final matchday with three points apiece, teeing up the prospect of all sorts of mayhem.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Here’s the rallying cry from former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

5 hrs from kickoff: Spain did some serious damage against Germany the last time they met, though that was before Hansi Flick took over.

Spain vs Germany live stream, TV channel

This was always going to be the must-watch of the World Cup group stage, but the stakes make it an even tastier matchup. After a shock 2-1 loss to Japan, Germany will be desperate for all three points against a Spain side that looked like a legitimate candidate to win the World Cup in their 7-0 obliteration of Costa Rica.

A loss against Spain would likely result in an embarrassing group-stage elimination for the Germans, while victory would virtually lock up a knockout round berth for Spain. If Germany were to prevail, it would set up a fascinating final day in Group E with qualification scenarios coming down to overall goal difference or other tiebreakers.
