Sporting CP vs. Tottenham live score, updates, highlights & lineups as Champions League Group D game remains goalless

Tottenham’s Champions League Group D game at Sporting CP remained goalless with an hour played.

Richarlison, who scored both goals in Spurs’ opening 2-0 win over Marseille, had the ball in the net before halftime, only to have strayed offside on the end of Harry Kane’s pass.

Former Tottenham youngster Marcus Edwards dazzled for the hosts and only a fine save from Hugo Lloris prevented him from netting a remarkable solo goal in first-half stoppage time.

Antonio Conte’s men resumed on the front foot, with Emerson Royal and Kane forcing saves from Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan.

The Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates and commentary.

Sporting CP vs. Tottenham live updates, highlights from the Champions League

76th minute: Kulusevski showing that he can be a game-changer. First he draws Reis into the yellowest of yellow card challenges down the right flank. Sporting half-clear the set piece and the Sweden playmaker retrieves the loose ball, crossing for Richarlison to head just off target.

74th minute: Emerson plops a useless cross into Adan’s arms and Conte is demanding answers on the touchline. It’s a good job he’s on the other side of the pitch.

72nd minute: Son’s goal drought goes on as he makes way for Kulusevski.

71st minute: Oh, that’s special from Perisic. Works half a yard and that’s all he needs to deliver a delicious cross. Kane is ruing the fact he couldn’t get on the end of it.

70th minute: The second half might be mirroring the first here, with Sporting hitting their stride after the midway point. Edwards dumps Davies on the floor. Spurs want a free-kick. It’s not coming and Hojbjerg has to clear behind. Morita’s shot from the corner is blocked.

69th minute: Edwards gets in a cross with Trincao waiting but Davies boots clear.

67th minute: Goncalves has some room to scamper into. He shapes to shoot from outside the box but that’s easier for Lloris than it ought to have been.

62nd minute: Bit of a scrappy passage of play now. Hojbjerg and Morita into the book for their respective sides.

56th minute: Back come Sporting, Goncalves finds Edwards but Dier blocks his shot this time.

55th minute: Another chance, Perisic with a far-post header. The Tottenham wingbacks are getting space in good areas.

54th minute: Rolls reversed from the first half as Richarlison plays in Kane. He’s onside but it’s a half chance at best. The England skipper thumps goalwards left footed. Adan saves but for a moment the keeper is worried the rebound will spin into his net when it bounces off Reis. He’s able to gather.

52nd minute: Sporting are going to need to be alert to these quick Spurs free-kicks. Son is the latest player to enjoy a chance thanks to Kane’s ingenuity. It probably amounts to Tottenham’s best spell of the game.

49th minute: The same combination undo Sporting again. Kane takes a cute quick freekick and Emerson darts in behind their defence. Adan saves with his knees and the rebound is scrambled behind. Nuno Santos wins a free-kick when the ball comes into the Sporting box.

48th minute: Kane gets down the left channel and delivers a quality cross. Wingback Emerson is the man arriving and his header forces a save from Adan. Conte will like the look of that.

46th minute: We’re back underway. Sporting get Edwards on the ball almost immediately from kickoff. Who can blame them?

Halftime: Work to do for Spurs. Sporting have been increasingly comfortable and, in Edwards, they have a sprinkling of magic that might yet turn the game in their favour.

45th minute+2: What did I say about chances? Edwards goes on a sensational run, ransacking his old Spurs mentor Dier and skipping past another couple of challenges. He takes a return pass and tries to prod home but Lloris does very well do save.

44th minute: By this stage of their game with Manchester City last season, Sporting were 4-0 down. This has been a far better effort from Amorim’s men, who have arguably been the better side. Although, when no one has really had any significant chances, you can argue all you like, I guess.

42nd minute: Richarlison has the ball in the net but the flag is up. Kane was the provider but the home defence stepped up effectively before the Spurs man rounded Adan and slotted home.

38th minute: Lovely feet from Son, who leaves his marker sprawling. He stands up an inviting ball into the Sporting box but there’s no one there to benefit.

35th minute: Nuno has had a lively half down the Sporting left and he forces Davies to clear for a throw-in. Romero is down and Spurs will hope that is nothing serious.

33rd minute: Finally the Spurs from three sparks. Kane drops off to play in Richarlison. He looks to unselfishly square to Son and Sporting get back to clear but the offside flag is up in any case.

29th minute: Emerson gets the better of Nuno down the Sporting left and whips a dangerous low ball across goal that evades everyone.

26th minute: Sporting respond with another rapid break and Spurs do not look comfortable at all when faced with this rotating, nippy front three. Trincao thrashes wide from 20 yards when a pass to Edwards might have been the better option.

25th minute: Perisic engineers space for a cross on the left and Richarlison should do better with his back post header. He nods it into the turf and it’s a fairly routine save for Adan.

24th minute: Kane looks for Richarlison and finds him as Reis loses his footing trying to cut out the lofted pass. The defender recovers to block the Brazil forward’s left-footed shot.

23rd minute: Not quite happening for Spurs at the moment. Richarlison finds Kane with a lovely backheel but the return pass is off target.

17th minute: Nuno Santos is Sporting’s attacking outlet once again. There’s another half-clearance from Dier and Spurs get back into their shape. Good moments for the hosts.

14th minute: This is a smoothly worked attack from Sporting. Dier gets a block on Nuno Santos’ cross and Emerson wins a soft-looking free-kick to put an end to all that.

11th minute: Spurs have recovered from that Edwards-based scare and are back in control of the contest. Kane is dropping deep into midfield as they continue to probe.

7th minute: We get out first look at Edwards on the break and Spurs are at sixes and sevens. He finds Goncalves, whose shot took a slight deflection and Lloris did well to turn it behind. The France number one catches the resulting corner.

4th minute: Dicey stuff at the back there from Sporting and Son could be in. He lays it back to Bentancur, who batters a shot goalwards from 25 yards. Inacio got the block in and that was a sore one. He’ll need a bit of treatment but should be fine.

2nd minute: Spurs have started on the front foot and Son wins a corner on the left-hand side. It comes to nought.

1st minute: We’re off. The 50,000 capacity arena isn’t completely full, with the teatime kickoff probably not doing the locals any favours. Even so, they’re making an almighty din. Spurs have started on the front foot and Son wins a corner on the left-hand side.

1 min from kickoff: We’re pausing for a moment’s reflection in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

4 mins from kickoff: Here come the teams, we’re not far away, ladies and gentlemen…

15 mins from kickoff: Everything looks rosy in the garden for Spurs and Conte at the moment, following an unbeaten start to the campaign. The one blemish is Son Heung-min’s uncharacteristic dry spell in front of goal. The South Korea star has failed to find the net in seven outings. If he can get on the goal train at Estadio Jose Alvalade tonight, then Tottenham will be really cooking.

35 mins from kickoff: Tottenham fans will recognise a familiar face in the Sporting lineup. There were high hopes for Marcus Edwards when he emerged through their youth setup but the first-team breakthrough never truly arrived. He moved to Portugal to kickstart his career, initially at Vitoria de Guimaraes and now at Sporting. He has scored six goals and laid on six assists in 22 matches since joining the Lisbon club in January.

55 mins from kickoff:  One change too for Sporting and it’s an attacking one. Nuno Santos, who completed the scoring against Eintracht Frankfurt, starts in place of the injured Jeremiah St Juste.

1 hour from kickoff: Here’s the Tottenham team. Conte has stuck with 10 of the 11 that beat Marseille, with Davies in for Lenglet on the left of the back three the only change. That means Richarlison is retained after his two-goal heroics and Kulusevski remains on the bench.

1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: Plenty of the teams facing English opposition this weekend might rue the cancellation of the Premier League schedule and how it allowed players to rest up for European action, but Sporting thoroughly enjoyed themselves domestically, hammering Portimonense 4-0. It means they have scored seven unanswered goals over the past week, but Ruben Amorim’s men will have to channel that form and more if they are to overturn a shocking history in these sort of games. They are without a win in six Champions League games against English teams, failing to score in all three home games – the most recent of which was a 5-0 loss to Manchester City.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Sporting CP vs. Tottenham in Champions League Group D

Sporting CP vs. Tottenham lineups

Amorim has a few concerns in defence after losing Jeremiah St Juste to a muscular injury during the win over Eintracht, before Goncalo Inacio and Luis Neto were forced off during the 4-0 rout of Portimonense.

Goncalo’s withdrawal at least appeared precautionary, and he joins Sebastian Coates and Matheus Reis in the back three. Nuno Santos will start and left wingback.

Sporting CP projected lineup (3-4-3): Adan (GK) — Inacio, Coates, Reis — Porro, Ugarte, Morita, Santos — Trincao, Edwards, Gonclaves.

A weekend off means the next examination over whether Conte can juggle his resources effectively for twice-weekly action in the Premier League and Champions League will have to wait a little while.

The Spurs boss made one change to the lineup that beat Marseille, with Ben Davies replacing Clement Lenglet. Richarlison‘s goals helped him to keep his place ahead of Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham projected lineup (3-4-3): Lloris (GK) — Romero, Dier, Davies — Emerson, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Perisic — Son, Kane, Richarlison.
